The final home game of the 2023-24 Howlers was sold out months ago - largely because of the Howlers' success, but also because it marked a return of coach Franklin O'Neill to the arena. In a game with playoff implications, especially for the Thrust, many expected a difficult match, and the Howlers were without starting guard Berty Lavoie-Williams due to injury. Ultimately the Howlers would win, keeping a razor-thin lead over the Arctics for the #1 seed. But the fairly competitive game itself wouldn't be remembered as much as the halftime show. On the sideline, a legendary reptile sat with the assistance of his wife Shannon, looking weary but attentive. D'Mitri Arthur played 10 seasons in Montana, and 1 in St. Paul (Mayors), then retired in 1981. When the Howlers learned of Arthur's ailing condition (undisclosed to the public), they knew that the MVP of the 1973 FBA Finals needed to be remembered forever, even if it were 51 years late, and it had only been a year since Arthur's former teammate and life-long friend Jake Elsinore's jersey number was retired. So the answer was obvious. Avery Kelly and Crosby Sutters received awards for their 2023-24 efforts, as well as two life-long fans who showed extraordinary dedication to the organization and community. But when the time came for Arthur to join Coach Gourdon, Sutters, Kelly, and the other award winners at center court, regular applause and cheers turned into a standing ovation, as the 76-year-old waved to the crowd with all the power he could muster. His struggle to stand without his wife holding him was a bit shocking. So imagine the reaction when Elsinore himself appeared from seemingly nowhere to embrace Arthur and hold his hand as he walked gingerly to center court. Howlers fans had been through a lot since those heydays. In a way, the jersey retirement felt like a coming-full-circle moment. They were here to celebrate another great season, but Arthur was a symbol - a torch - passing to this next generation of players the hope and opportunity of another generation's worth of success. A blanket covering #2 on the wall was unveiled, and the crocodile, visibly affected by the honor, teared up and hugged his wife.
