Biography
José Miguel Carrestados was born in La Mirada, California to Panamanian parents who immigrated to the States in the early 1980's for economic opportunity. A typical story, but the family had a strong connection to the USA. His maternal grandparents had worked as 'burrowing' owls on the Panama Canal, and such connections presented opportunities to take their work to the Great North. Having a strong connection to the Central American country, and being in such a mixed cultural region of the United States, offered José an early glimpse into the complications of the world. The thing is: he's never been to Panama. If you asked him what type of 'latino' he was, he may offer you a surprised glimpse with big, furrowed brows and yellow eyes. It's not a question that the average Californian bothers to ask.
José started athletics as a matter of belonging - fitting in - and it developed into a passion and side-hobby. When he was bored, he'd dribble a ball. If family events were nerving, he'd go out back with his cousins and play 2-on-2. Little things could set him off and basketball was his solace. Money was there, but it was limited. The middle school team was pitifully undersized, and José was no different. His determination and leadership to make something of it kept his head screwed on (but not too tight). It's widely known that Avian basketball players have increased injury concerns, which limits their durability. A wing injury in his third year of high-school limited his shooting capacity such that long shots are unlikely but this allowed increased focus on accuracy with the ball, which coaches narrowed in on with admirability. A recurring theme of José's athletic adventures was a constant battle to avoid truancy: friends from his childhood were making poor life decisions, dropping out and skipping school, getting involved in gangs. If there was any notion of José facing adversity for tying himself to school, his parents would try to push him away from those things. If that was not effective, his coach and Uncle Roberto could turn him around. He cites these years as being vital to staying on a path to success. His family pushed him to be an ""example"" rather than a ""statistic,"" which struck close to home.
The owl graduated high school and stayed local, taking a sports scholarship at El Alado College in Pasadena. The temptation to change to soccer, but the school basketball coaches cited needing a viable shooter in the paint, who could post up, and owls did have some physical advantages (comparatively speaking) that other avians couldn't risk. He started off the bench in his freshman year but quickly moved to the front five as a shooting guard, then as a point guard - where he would remain for the rest of his collegiate career. He played alongside Matilde Rocha for several of these years.
It helped to have a striking face and great forward vision. This had an unexpected effect on opponents who often struggled to read his signals, and so it was. Carrestados' strengths were his unwavering temperament and passing accuracy; the focus drifting away from his shooting power and, rather, an innate natural ability to set up zone defense. He averaged 4.1 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game in his senior year, which was second-highest in his conference (for both stats). Initially, the scouting crew stayed away due to a lackluster 2016 season for El Alado, and Carrestados' casual, dismissive attitude toward playing professionally. By 2018, however, his leadership was consistently proving to be instrumental to the team's success in its division, and he achieved an award in Student Leadership from El Alado in April.
Carrestados enters the FBA draft on an expectation that his mentality and ball-handling skills will be a conventional plus to several teams who need a strong 'back bone' player to support showy and flashy front-runners.
