Story:Business Meeting
Business Meeting
Written by Martineau QC and Haloke
It was the evening after today game, Yves, who had a meeting with the agent Duncan Mulloy, was waiting at that nice Cafe where he decided to have dinner with him. A band was playing some good tunes as the place was lively. Fortunatly for Yves, he manage to have a VIP table where they would had some time for themselves, since important business was to be talked about. Yves was enjoying a good beer, as he waited for the fellow to come. The both of them had settled on a time, and Duncan had arrived right on time. He wasn't one to be late or early by very much, he prided himself on being precisely on time. Slipping his watch back into his pocket he quickly asked the waiter for his party in waiting and was led to the VIP table.
"Good evening Mr. Martineau. I trust you haven't been waiting long?" he reached out offering a clawed, furry hand to shake. He was considerably shorter than the other male, standing only about 5'5". Yves smiled, as he got up and reach his hand for a handshake.
"Oh no not at all. I hope you been enjoying your stay in Winnipeg Monsieur Mulloy. Please have a seat. Would you like a beer to start?" The artic Fox said, with his usual cheerful attitude.
Mulloy scanned the table after shaking the other's hand. "No, thank you. I prerfer not to drink during business talks. I thought you were bringing a guest? I suppose you've changed your mind?" The man's voice was deep and gravely, and his expression was one of jaded, mild interest. He took up a menu and scanned it passively as he waited for a response.
"Well indeed. Besides, Tanner had already had a agent and I figures there was quite some important stuff I wanted to talk about.." He said, as he sips his beer and looked to the menu as well. " Should I believe you seen what happened with the Ste-Croix incident? Quite a mess.." Yves said, having move over the issue quite well since he had a talk with Mr.Tomasi.
"Hm yes, it was quite the PR disaster. I'd be turning in my letter of resignation and terminating my contract were he one of my clients." he nodded and motioned to a waiter to bring him a glass of water. "But, thankfully, I do not represent that...less than charming individual. Now then let's get down to business shall we?"
"But of course. So, as you can see. I been looking for an agent. This season has been going really well for me, well almost even better that I expected. I did my best to train during the summer to turn our bad luck around, and well even if the team been in a slump. I feel like im doing my part. It's my last year of my contrat and it going to be my first big step into free agency..." Yves followed. Duncan listened closely, his ears flicked up at attention as he pulled out a leather binder. Opening it up to a pad of paper and a fountain pen he nodded.
"Yes I've taken the liberty of looking into your statistics and it seems your personal performance is certainly passable despite your team's poor standing in the league currently. We can't all have championship teams every year. So you're looking for someone to represent you in free agency then?"
"Well yes. I am really looking to have someone help me with that. The thing is, I really love this city and the opportunity that the Voyageurs gave me to be a part of the team, Am a quebecer at heart but Winnipeg and Canada take a part in it too. So it comes with no suprise that would they offer me something they pretty much a front runner, but also, I would not want to look like that I would be snobbing others teams...and there little odds and ends that I would need pointers with." he sips his beer again. I seen your resume on your website. Your a man of business, and that pretty much something im looking for."
"Yes, I've a lot of experience in various things you could say. And I've dealth with free agency before. What I can do for you is help you get where you want to go. Take your visions of your ideal future and try to help you realize them. If that involves staying on a Canadian team I can help you realize that action while maintaining a fair salary and contract as you do so." Duncan nods. "I'm experienced in public relations, and I'll be able to see to it that no bridges are left burn if you graciously deny other contract offers."
Yves smiles, enjoying the conversation he had so far. "Well I am happy to hear this. I be frank, I was worried for a second that I be a type of person that you have trouble trying to work with. Not like behavior-wise, you seem so into your work as for me, well you might have seen the little conversation I had on Tweeter about connecting with Fans and people..Bin simple, im a people person, I like to reach to him, show them im available to them. A friendly Fox from Quebec. Pas mal ca." He chuckles. Duncan nodded flatly as the waiter came by to take their orders. "Brazed ribs please." he asked quickly before returning to the conversation.
"So, you'd want to set up various public outreach events? Autograph signings, public appearances, etcetera? I can help you organize those and put us into contact with the right people. I have a respectable network."
[20:38:02] Erik Carbonneau: "I will have the BBQ pull pork poutine." He said, as he smiled to the waiter as he left the area."Good good. The more I hear you speak the more I have faith and trust into you Monsieur Mulloy. I won't lie to you, while I been looking for your services as a agent is true, I might have other motives for something even bigger." The Fox said. "I trust that you can keep this confidential between you and me?" He followed.
"All dealings with clients or potential clients are treated, by law, as confidential." He repeated as if well practiced at the verse. "So you have nothing to worry about." He offered just the slightest smirk. "Interested in more? What would you like to see in your future?" he asked and withdrew a stapled packet of papers printed on clean, professional letterhead. "For you to take home with you. A potential contract outlining my specific duties, obligations, and payment of course should you choose to sign it or further change or alter it."
Yves smiles, as he took the papers and read it for a moment, before putting it down. "Well, I always been a great ambassador for my province of Quebec, and always made my best to promote the FBA over there. But I feel like I want to do more for all the little Quebecer furs that want to pursue in the FBA with some extra motivation and gives the fans something to be excited about....long story short..I want to work in bringing a FBA franchise in Quebec." he dropped. The wolverine paused as their food was delivered, seeming to think long and hard about that proposition.
"Bringing a team to Quebec? Are we talking transitioning a team here or expanding the league? Either way that's not a goal that's accomplished in a year unless we're extremely fortunate. What were your plans for this team? Were you going to lobby to fund it? Or would be need to find an owner? And there's managers, coachs, not to mention arenas and facilities to consider."
Yves thanked the waiter. "Well that just it. I understand that there is plently to do before ever considering so..I mean, my time in the FBA might be over by the time the project get off, but I know I still got plenty of years left in me. It's been a dream of mine that I need some directions about it you know? I mean the way the League been going perhaps a relocation might be in order, but it's only speculation from that point. I know I will need plently of interest and investors..and there alot of other things to consider that I may not know how to handle...but your Business knowhow sure might be able too...I know it may be alot to ask for, I would not want to put too much on your plate..it's a long term project for sure...I wanna wait till there solid fondations to stand on before even announcing this project to the public...would you be willing to help me?" The Fox asked.
"Should we enter into an agreement I will do everything in my power to realize your business endeavors. However you must understand that such a project will take considerable amounts of effort, time, and funding. though I suppose testing the waters and seeing if the commitee is even accepting applications for expansions would be the first step. There's also the notion of my own monetary compensation. Usually it's agreed upon that 25% of all earnings from events outside the FBA proper are mine if I have been at all involved in the formation of these events. This does not include my regular salary recieved from you." Duncan explained pointing his fountain pen to the line on the contract's third page about his payment details. "This salary is negotiable should you choose. Currently my acceptable salary sits at $100,000 yearly. That's US dollars."
Yves looked into the document with outmost care. "That's a big project..but when you want something, you will never know until you try. Seeing how the league been pretty even, I suppose there not much talk about expansions..that why I been thinking about maybe a relocation might happen sooner.." He said. "I been taking good care of my finances just for this..You will be compensated for your help Monsieur Mulloy, I garantee it." He said.
"And I expect it." He smiled and nodded once adjusting his reading glasses. "I hold myself to a high standard of service. and I can promise you I will do my best to see to your day to day needs, especially when not in home territory. For example I can see that your hotel lodgings are suitable and prepared for your arrival. Among other things. You simply need to call. We will hold personal, face to face meetings once a month in order to stay on base with each other's vision.'
Yves nods in satisfaction. "Yes sir Yes sir! You can't realize how happy it makes me...I get to work on a personal dream. As I said before, getting some extra help never hurt. I just want to make sure that people know the kind of person I am..it not always about fame and money...J'aime le Basketball et j'aime le Québec. that's pretty much it."
Duncan simply blinked not having really any clue what the other had said. "Yes...quite. So I think I'll leave you with that contract to read in your free time. My phone number is printed there and I look forward from hearing from you." He had finished his meal by now. He was a fast eater. Standing up and adjusting his tie he offered a hand out to shake once more. "It was a pleasure and I look forward to our business together. Once the contract is signed I can fax you some other minor paperwork and then submit the documentation to the league and have you put on my record."
Yves would then finish his drink, and would extend his hand once more to shake. "Likewise Monsieur Mulloy. Look forward to work with you." Yves smiles. "Oh by the way, if my french-canadian confuse you, I can be more careful next time." He chuckles once more.
"If it makes you feel more comfortable go right ahead. Simply be aware that I don't know a lick of french or french canadian." he let out a slight chuckle and shook the other's hand. "Thank you for this meeting. I hope you have a pleasant holiday and rest of the evening." With that he said his goodbies and made his exit.
