When you pit the most talked about team of the West versus the most talked about team of the East, you're in for a must-see. It could be argued that all the eyes fell on one specific player defending the Howler turf tonight: Sterling Bengtzing (Marbled Polecat, C/F). Fresh from a preseason blunder, and full of confidence and rage, many expected the sight of anything Keystone would set him off into bust land for good. What followed was farther from the expectations: All-Star class Basketball. The normally boisterous rookie went completely silent both on person and in media the hours following this game, allegedly not wanting to be bothered for all the following day. Imagine our shock when the office found out he was starting, only for him to show elite professionalism and the ability we have saw in the Combine and in Howlereen, but this Sterling was completely different from his other showings, choosing the unorthodox method of becoming the shooter. Seems that a win was on his mind, didn't matter what he'd end up doing. The first quarter let up a great equal showing from both sides, a constant tandem of scores between Shirley Takamoto (Jaguar, F/G) and Vincent Maraundi (Caracal, G/F), and it seemed at first that we were going to open the second half with another equalized quarter, but a last minute fess-up from rookie Saga Ström (Howler Monkey, F/G) allowed Kresta Renstill (Silver Fox, G) a chance at the free throw line for two, permitting the Howlers to close with a one possession lead. Rookie Erik Kijani (Leopard, G) tried to salvage on the last 3 seconds, but an impressive block by Hiroyuki Matsuura (Shrike, C/F) saved the home team's lead. Bengtzing's score-first approach took somewhat of a toll as the game went on, Wayne Kirkpatrick (Tasmanian Devil, F) managed to get a big chunk of points, most of these in the third quarter, closing with a precarious one-point lead. Here we saw the polecat click. From rushing forward with an impressive dunk to forcing a foul from Lance Freewell (Clouded Leopard, C) for an extra two points, the polecat was in complete synth with Matsuura, as the shrike kept on with his stellar defensive game, letting the polecat continue with his unorthodox plan. It was a nail-biter finish, with a tandem of shots by Bengtzing and Bobby-Rae Brine (Stingray, G) securing the victory at home, and I have yet to see a mustelid yell with that much excitement, in two languages to boot! While Player of the Game honors went to the avian again, Sterling was the most-sought player for the post-game interviews. Facing his allegedly most hated team second time around, and going away with an utmost professional showing and the victory. "It was tough because in a lotta ways I still feel the same rage, the same exact feelings they need to know, but the other half of me was like 'No, keep your s*** together'. You gotta understand where my reason comes from, but in the end I realized that I gotta make sure to play tough and street yet cool and calculated like dad woulda wanted, Matsuura and Renstill kept it going and my mind was set for only the victory. And that's how the win was secured. Kalabalik isn't over!" If this is a sign of things to come, we might have saw the true beginning of possibly one of the most promising talents of this draft class. Will this be his Kalabalik and a sign for greatness? no other choice but to stay tuned. ~Z. Donovan.
