Leaving Home
Written by Akkarri

Even knowing it could happen doesn't make it any easier. You think you're prepared for it until it actually happens and then you realize you never were and never really would be prepared for it.

I'm sure that was what we were both thinking up until this moment. Even as we all waited for the announcements to come during the draft night festivities, we all didn't think about this moment coming and still seemed so far away. But now, the excitement of the festivities had died down, the realities of the selection had finally sank in.

At least we had gotten much of the cleaning and essential packing done before draft night, in case of such a possibility, though I'm sure Mom was hoping that it wouldn't come to that. But I'm sure her heart rose and sank when she heard the selection come from the Albany Alphas, the other side of the country and almost like the other side of the world to her. Happy for me, yet sad that her cub was going to leave so far from home.

As we did the final packing before I would leave to Albany, we both seemed to become more and more silent and contemplative as the inevitable moment came closer.

I needed to take a break, pausing and taking a moment to give Mom a chance to talk.

"Viran... So it's really happening?" she asked.

"It seems so, Mom. It's hard to believe but It seems I'm finally going to play like I dreamed," I responded.

"I know, it's your dream... and I'm happy you're getting the chance... But Viran... your still my cub... and it's so far..." She said, gripping my arm.

"You know I'll call when I can. Someone has to keep check on you and dad. Besides I'll be sure to get you in on any games I can... and you know I love you," I said trying to reassure her with a smile.

"I know. Your dad and I are both proud of you. Your Grandpapa would have been proud too," She said as I gave her a nod, "We'll miss you..."

I nodded, "Yes, but at least you'll see me again in a few more days."

"Yes, so you can get your car and everything... but I suppose," she paused, squeezing my arm, "It's just really sinking in now... my cub is finally growing up and leaving the den..."

We hugged for a moment, before we agreed to finish up so we got everything taken care of before my flight. We exchanged a few more heartfelt goodbyes at the gates before I had to board, and go to turn my dream into a reality.
