Richard "Silver Hammer" Maxwell was a power forward for the Montana Howlers.
Born in Southampton, England, Maxwell grew to love the sport of basketball for its art, its challenge and the attention it brought. He especially grew to love the attention and seized the moment as his talents grew playing street ball on the courts of Southampton. He earned his nickname for his throwdown slams; tagged with the nickname "Silver Hammer" as a pun on the silly Beatles song. Maxwell's dunking prowess became so popular that a videotaped 360-degree slam he performed went viral.
Maxwell played professionally with the London Jets in the EFBL and single-handedly took undermanned United Kingdom teams far in the furry FIBA international tourneys. That played to his strength and also his weakness: his tendency to look out for himself on the court. Richard wasn't necessarily a team cancer or an unredeemable team player. But he was, and still is, a one-fur show. The buck's major eccentricity is that he always refers to himself in the third person as "Richie" without fail. It's also not unusual to see him without an admiring female hanging onto his arm when he's not focusing on basketball.
Richard was drafted 22nd overall in the 2011 FBA Draft by the Santa Fe Whips and played in the Rookie Challenge that same year. Despite his poor second season and complaints about not getting playing time, the Whips offered him a three-year deal worth $4.5 million, and he accepted.
With all the changes over the Whips the last couple of seasons, Richie became a veteran to go to for rookies and newcomers, one who understood what the Whips wanted to accomplish. Before the 2015-16 season, Richie was the longest-tenured Whip under contract with the team.
After his career, Maxwell settled down with a family and has one child. He works with the United Kingdom national team.
