Brown Goes Down, Howlers Soar

Ever since the first Howlereen Invitational between the Montana Howlers and the Huntsville Mayors, the two teams have clashed with each other from time to time, producing absolute gems of basketball matches, and tonight's game, which was played with retro jersey designs from the first Howlereen match, was no exception. Asides from being two of the most historically strong teams in the FBA, with nine championships each, the Howlers and the Mayors have had quite a bit of recent history between them, and several players from the two team were formerly of the opposing team. However, one of those players, Wendy Brown (Saber-toothed Tiger, G), was forced to miss out on this rather historic rivalry, thanks to a Twitter blowup of gigantic proportions against former Howlers and current Thrust guard Shane Rufus (Red Wolf, G) earlier in the day, suspending her for a week. The Mayors announced Telki Holland (Chinchilla, G) as their starting point guard in the lineup instead of Brown; however, Bailey Brisbane (Catahoula Leopard Hound, G), captain for the Howlers and Holland's match-up at point guard, quickly proved to be too much for her, as he proceeded to score a season-high 20 points against her and picked up 7 assists as well in the process. Meanwhile, the battle of the two players at the center position was also one to behold; Hiroyuki Matsuura (Shrike, C/F) and Baltasár Torrealba y Toboso (Aldabra Giant Tortoise, C/F) had been traded for each other back in Draft Night, and both seemed extremely eager to prove to the other team why they were wrong to trade him, as they both managed to score a double-double against each other. Despite Brown's absence, the Mayors consistently held their own against the home team, only coming up two points short of the Howlers after the first quarter; however, the Howlers were just able to edge past the visitors as quarter by quarter passed, and by the end of the game, they had built up a lead of seven points to end the game. Lemond Conkale (Florida Panther, F/G) won his fourteenth Player of the Game award of the season after another stellar performance of 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists; this gives him a tie with D’Angelo MacQuilkin (Lion, G) and Jake Turner (Red Fox, C/F) for the number of PoTG awards, the former of which, despite pulling his own weight in the game without his girlfriend, was unable to stop the Mayors from losing. With tonight's win, the Howlers also extend their winning streak to a season-best five games, while the Mayors see their own seven-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

The Howlers await at home to face the Lorain Firestorm on the 4th, while the Mayors finish off their current three-game road trip on the same day against the Las Vegas Wildcards.
