Biography

Summarized:

“I’ll put this team on the map as well as join the FBA. Then, and only then, will I let myself acknowledge my capabilities.”

Life for Ravishu was full of wonder and positivity. Born to a teacher and a nurse, growing up in Mahabaleshwar was all but joyless. Everything that made up the small town, and drew in tourists from all over, is exactly why their parents chose to settle there. Their father (Indian flying fox) and mother (yellow-winged bat) met while in school. Pursuing a degree in education, their father quickly fell for Ravishu’s mother. In the first year of dating, Ravishu’s father realized the financial burden their mother had taken on for nursing school. In an effort to help her, their father postponed college and picked up three jobs. Through sheer hard-work, Ravishu’s father managed to squeeze himself into any opportunity for learning.

To Ravishu, their parents were their everything. They counted their blessings at having such grand role models to raise them and their two siblings. Perhaps to others, their father and mother’s stories weren’t all unique. But to Ravishu? They were the basis for how they’d strive to live their own life. In their father’s case, he’d worked beyond hard after earning his degree. Through his diligence, he was able to secure a government teaching job.

As a child, their parents taught them it was okay to make mistakes as long as you learned from them. Working hard and earnestly was better than being deceitful and taking short-cuts. They wanted Ravishu and their siblings to understand the importance of being simple, sincere, furs. In having such a positive upbringing, the bat was allowed to explore many things. One of these things was cricket and basketball.

Cricket came into their life as a bonding sport with their parents. Basketball came from the younger brother, Sahil. At age four, Sahil was diagnosed with DMD. By the time he was 8, the family saw signs of weakening legs. To comfort their brother, Ravishu immersed themselves into their brother’s favorite hobby of basketball. While they were better at cricket, they never gave up trying to learn the ropes of this new sport. When Sahil was 13 and wheelchair-bound, 15 year old Ravishu had their own genuine interest in basketball. Though they still had a lot to learn, they’d made the decision to switch primary sports. All thanks to their younger brother and the years they’d spent bonding, a fire was lit in Ravishu. Not only would they keep up with basketball, they’d be good at it.

High school started off with Ravishu being one of the worst players their team had seen. Freshman year, they couldn’t make the cut for the team. Sophomore year, they made it but were bench all year. Then came junior year and everyone saw the effort Ravishu had been putting in. Maintaining a 3.0 while practicing every other given moment had been the bat’s past two and a half years. Near the end of junior year, they’d jumped to starting point guard and helped lead their team to finals. Though they lost in the first round, Ravishu would shock many in their senior year. Getting past the first round was the first shock. Past the second round and most thought it pure luck. When the high-school team won, everyone saw how the bat’s hard work had been paying off. It was in this shock win led by Ravishu, that the bat ended up on college scouts’ radars. They hadn’t given much thought to specific colleges when scholarships and interest letters came to them. It only took one answer to an after-game-reporter, ‘I’d like to go to England, if at all possible.’, and they’d gotten offers from overseas. Two offers in particular stuck out to the bat.

Leicester Uni....and ELion University

At first, life at Leicester Uni was near pure culture shock to Ravishu. Though, within just four months of living there, they’d adjusted well. Finding their groove back into their training started off rough. Once they found it, it was nowhere but up from there. Leicester Uni hadn’t had a decent showing in years; their last championship run being six years old. Despite this, Ravishu was resolute in getting the team to come together again.

The first fur to hear this goal of theirs was a rabbit named Arther Selby.

In a scrimmage their schools had, word spread how the bat point guard denied ELion’s offer. Word also spread how Selby planned on going to the FBA. It was by chance Ravishu bumped into Arther after game and spilled croc-o-ade all over the two of them. In the limited time they had to talk, both exchanged numbers and well wishes for each other. More than that, though, was a deal made between the two. Ravishu now had Arther Selby as a reason to really make it. When the two began to part ways, the bat turned on their heels and exclaimed: “I’ll put this team on the map, Arther! As well as join the FBA! Then, and only then, will I accept your acknowledgement of me!”

And so, 18 year old Ravishu put their nose to the grindstone. Day after day, month after month– the bat never let up on training. ‘Ghar ki murgi, dal barabar.’ was their father’s parting words of wisdom when they left for England. If they didn’t give their all, then were they truly trying at all? With as much value as basketball gave their life, they’d put all their efforts into becoming better and better. It finally paid off in 2020 when Leicester Uni made the finals. Though they lost in the 1st round and watched ELion go on, Ravishu kept hope alive. 2021 was their year when, led by Ravishu in an OT game, Leicester Uni won.

Making it into the point-guard top 20 of the year prospects, Ravishu set their sights on making true the dreams they’d laid out for Arther Selby. While their family had been back in India, Ravishu kept busy working their tail off. It was evident to many that they had the potential to become fba-worthy; their stats were more than enough to show this. However, Ravishu Khattar was never one to intentionally seek the spotlight. When asked to spare time for questions or interviews, they rarely accept – instead suggesting other players.

In a rare interview given to an FBA scout recently, though, Ravishu answered:

“My motivation? Ah. I owe my very being here to my family. I’d like to join the FBA to gather funds to help my parents get closer to their dreams. Just as I’m on the path to doing. Other than that, I’d like to help encourage and burn a brighter path for other potential Indian players. There’s a third reason here but I fear it’d keep us a while. You and all the others always ask who I am or who I want to beat. I have no answers for that. All I can say is that, well– I’m just a guy who’s good at basketball.”

Scouting Report

Pre-draft:

While they may not have a huge wingspan (not counting their wings), they have a tremendous combination of quickness and physicality for a guard. They have the ability to get to spots with the ball and has improved as a jump shooter. Able to slide off the ball in multi-guard lineups (though playing primarily pg), they're able to shred opposing defenses with their ability to change speeds and get downhill with or without a ball screen. They were able to shoot three's at a high level all year in their final time at Uni (2021-2022 season). Uses quickness to make plays for others. Has the quickness to pressure opposing ball handlers into mistakes, the toughness to defend bigger guards, an urgency closing out shooters, and a knack for getting a hand on the ball

  • Substantial shot creating burden with over half of their possessions coming in isolation or ball screen situations.
  • A shifty ball handler whose ability to stop and start with the ball and sharp footwork allowed him to create separation at will -- showing ability to stop and pop with a consistency
  • Size still works against them in spots -- has room to improve their floater
  • Ability to attack the rim and make quick reads
  • Unselfishness and ability to use their speed to simplify the game for others
  • Still has some room to improve as a free throw shooter
  • Mature defensive player with an impressive combination of quickness, intensity, and toughness - beating opposing ball handlers to spots; adept at drawing charges or getting a hand on the ball.
  • Sometimes needs to be told to be more firm in taking charge / calling shots
