A hard-fought game by the struggling visitors paid off when Crosby Sutters (Genet, F/C) prevented overtime with a buzzer-beating longball from the corner that rattled through the hoop for the three-point win.
The last second-heroics capped off an almost Pyrrhic effort by Spectrums team captain Monty Silverthorn (Pine Marten, G), who had been relegated to the deep reserves of the Santa Ana lineups after dismal performances for the majority of the season thus far. As if in a desperation attempt to snap their losing streak, Head Coach Alan Foster (Dingo) gave the pine marten a starting role due to reigning Rookie of the Year Luukas Hirvonen (Cougar, G) still sidelined by injury. Critter responded with a stellar performance that reminded FBA fans why he was the #1 pick of the 2008 FBA Draft.
The hosting Alphas, however, were not going to let the resurgent mustelid or his team run away with the game. Led by franchise guard Lance Wildfyre (Rabbit, G) who would finish the day with 9 points and 6 rebounds, Albany's bench efforts brought the hometown club up by four at the half after trailing Santa Ana by six after the first quarter. Toby Papanastasopoulos (Skunk, F) would lead his own bench charge in the third quarter to tie the game at 64 apiece going into the final frame.
Silverthorn, who had been sitting for most of the second and third quarters, once again found open shots and lanes to drive in the last quarter, drawing fouls on Rodger Umaechi (Husky, F) and Craig Reinhardt (Black Panther, F/C) to keep his club neck-and-neck with the Alphas. During a frenzied rebounding effort, however, rookie René Lacoste (Jackal, G) was charged with an over-the-back violation after colliding with Silverthorn mid-air and causing the pine marten to land awkwardly and collapse to the floor holding his left footpaw. Instead of demoralizing the visitors, the Spectrums found the inspiration and energy to attack the basket aggressively, as Paul Schäfer (German Shepherd, G) and Justin Destrier (Stallion, C) would draw even more fouls from the home team and hit their free throws to maintain a slim lead.
Despite Dasher fouling out with under a minute to play, Albany managed to tie up the game at 89-all after a missed shot by Teresa Price (Raccoon, F) was tipped in by fellow procyon Anthony Rios (Raccoon, G/F). On the final possession, rookie Zack Plushpaw (Pine Marten, G) explained what happened: "Coach had drawn up a play to have one of our three bigs break free under the basket, preferably Lance. The defense was pretty tight, however, and when we couldn't get the ball in to him, Paul sent it to me to give it to Daius Aurelias (Lion, F/C) instead. But Crosby broke to the corner and when Viran Kivar (Jaguar, F) hesitated on following him, I fired it his way and he just let loose the game winner. I knew he was gonna be open, I just didn't know he popped it past the arc until the final score was displayed."
Monty led all scores and earned Player of the Game honors with 25 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist. Sutters had missed a previous shot from the woods, but the game winner gave him 11 points to go along with his 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Plushpaw, Aurelias and Cheval all earned double-doubles, the rookie scoring 13 while pulling down 11, the lion putting up 12 to go with 10 rebounds, and My Big Pony racking up 11 points and 12 rebounds. Santa Ana heads off to Texas to face the Lone Stars on Wednesday.
For the defeated Alphas, Umaechi led with 16 points to go with 3 rebounds, 7 assists, and a block. Kivar piled on 12 points, 3 rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Albany visits Charm City Center on Wednesday to face the Baltimore Spirits.
