His eyes widened from the site of the graceful style that was played by the team led by none other than Halley Summers. After that game, he was even able to give a simple fist bump to the Cheetah. Later on, his dad finally gave him a small mirror, telling him that he could use it to help him picture what wanted to do in life. That was a memory he would always cherish in his life, and it gave him the passion of wanting to be a professional basketball player. | ||
When he tried out for his middle school basketball team in the 6th grade, he was having a bit of a struggle in figuring out the ways to play the game. After the first few days, he was frustrated on how bad he’s been playing, thinking whether or not he was even meant to play on the court. However, Craig wasn’t going to let him give up that easy. He decided to make it a little interesting. He placed a little wager against the meerkat. He told him, “If you make the team, then I’ll be your personal trainer for however long you’re gonna be doing, but if don’t… Then you’re gonna be my personal assistant for the rest of your days. Biography
Jonathan Lawyer is viewed to be one of the odd ones in the group. Even at a young age, he's always does the things most furs would consider crazy and weird. One of his favorite things to do as a child was wearing face paint, due to his family being part Samoan, and gloves of different varieties. He also likes talks himself into the mirror. However, the mirror is very personal to him. When he talks to the mirror, he makes it seems like he is talking to his father, who died when Johnny was 8 years old. It makes him feel a bit more confident about himself, and makes him feel better when he's down.
Due to that, not a lot of kids really wanted to hang around him. However, only one kid would spend time with him and he became the closest friend of his life, a porcupine named Craig Miller. The two always end up doing the craziest things for years, and it always lead them to trouble. Even though a lot of people consider them as outsiders and not very likable, they couldn't care less and enjoy themselves of being the dangerous duo.
Entering The Basketball Life
Johnny’s interest in basketball wasn't really high in his early years. When his father was alive, he would always tell stories about how he was a former Mascot for the Huntsville Mayors. Even though he found the stories interesting and memorable, he never really had that true spark to play. However, when he was given the opportunity to go to a game as a surprise birthday gift from his dad in 2000.
Starting now!!~” The porcupine dashed away before John could even get a word out. He chuckled a tad bit, and he made sure he worked hard to make it in the team. After weeks of practicing, he exceeded the coaches expectations and was successful in making it in. So Craig officially became his trainer, and their friendship was bonded with the sport.
In high school, he already started to become better with his perimeter shooting. However, due to the lack of defense and struggles with driving, he was benched for a majority of his freshman and sophomore years. After the first couple of years of not really getting the respect he wanted from the coaching staff, He tried his hardest, with the help of Craig, to get better at getting points from the paint and with perimeter defense. In his junior year, he became more important in the rotation as the sixth man. The coaches started to see even more potential in him as the season progressed and he became the starter. In his senior year, he was able to achieve team captain and helped his school achieve their first championship while he was attending.
College Life and Career
It was rather difficult in finding a college for Johnny. He wasn’t able to obtain a full ride scholarship for his athletics and academics. However, Craig was able to give him some aid. With both of Craig’s parents being an alumni and a well known friend to the principal, the both of them went to Ferrengton University in Athens, GA. John went into to the field of engineering and earned bachelor's degree.
When basketball was concerned, He was able to get a spot in the roster for the Ferrengton Natives. However, the meerkat later on suspended in the beginning of the season. The reason was due to being in a fist fight. The meerkat was being harassed by a few furs, and one of them smashed the beloved mirror his father gave him when he was a pup. John completely lost it, and he quickly started to beat the livin’ hell out of the fur to the point where he went to undergo surgery. He was on the brink of getting expelled as well, but when the evidence was shown they went easy on him, banning him from going on campus for a month and was suspended from the team. This put the meerkat in a very depressive state, regretting what he did. However with the help of Craig and a few teammates, the meerkat began to work his hardest on the court to help him feel good about himself again and prepare for a redemption year. During that amount of time, he gained 20 lbs to reach the current weight of 200 which helped him become more suited in switching from the 2 and 3, thus giving him even more minutes.
When his junior year, the coaching staff became very impressed with his play in both the two and the three spot in the line up that he was able to obtain a starting position in his junior year, and was achieving double digit points a game. When it came to his final year, he was able to help Ferrengton reach the FCAA championship tournament for the first time in over 30 years. He was even able to help his team win to make it to the sweet 16 with a corner three buzzer beater. However, they were eliminated after being dismantled by the heavily favored Braylor.
Vegas Street Heat and the Combine
After he placed his name in the 2015 draft, he registered himself to take part of the year's Vegas Street Heat Tournament. He was on a team that consists of Micah Davenport, Hank Sawyer, Samantha Canuteson, Mika Ziggler. For the practice games, his team was able to do well winning them both. However for the meerkat, he showed inconsistency in the games he played. Out of the 3 games he played, there were times when he would play phenomenal, but there were other times where he would fall flat in his paws. Most of the time it was the latter. From making bone-headed fouls to throwing it in the stands a few times, it was clear that he wasn't at his best in the tourney and the team that he was apart of was eliminated from play.
A couple of months later in the combine, The meerkat was hoping to redeem himself after a disappointing performance in the previous tournament, and he exceeded expectations. Lawyer was in the top 5 in the speed trials, the top 10 in the Agility trials and the Non-stationary Shooting Challenge, and tied for silver in the Maximum Vertical Jump. Overall he finished 5th in the entire combine and he had the highest score of the forwards who participated in the 2015 combine.
