The 2020 Summer Olympics is hosted in Tokyo, Japan.

Basketball

Twelve nations qualified to compete for the Gold Medal in the 2020 Olympics. Each nation fields a squad of 12 players who qualify to play under that nations' flag.

Format

The teams are divided into two groups of six (6) for a Round Robin qualifier. Each team will play the other five (5) teams from their group once. The top four (4) from each group will move onto the Quarterfinals. The Group Winners are placed on opposite sides of the bracket and will play the 4th place team in the opposite group and the 2nd place team of each group will play the 3rd place team from the opposite group. The Semifinalists will play each other to determine who moves onto the Finals, the losers of the Semifinal games will play in a Bronze Medal Match. Winner of the Finals takes home the Gold Medal while the losers will take home the Silver Medal.

The home team of Japan kicked off their Olympic campaign with a disappointing 111-79 loss to the underdogs of Puerto Rico, led by Vera La Tiérra (Red Fox, G) to a surprising win and early lead in their group. The Williamsburg Minutemen franchise player shocked the Japanese by posting an extremely solid display of 30 points, 11 assists, partnering up with Carol Quiñones (Wolf, F/C) to set up stunning plays that threw the home crowd for a loop as the islanders easily came back from an early deficit and never relinquished the lead. The only bright note from Japan came by two players who didn't compete four years ago, when the Asian times was eliminated in the group phase - Shirley Takamoto (Jaguar, F/G), who decided to jump to Japanese citizenship to play the Games at home, and 4-year veteran Takeru Ishijima (Siberian Tiger, F), whose lack of offensive prowess didn't deter from posting a good showing of 13 rebounds. It remains to be seen whether the Japanese can regroup in what is already perceived as an in-or-out game against the defending silver medalists of Great Britain.

The Canadian team was certainly relieved to be drawn against the seemingly way weaker Cameroonian side for their Group A opening game, but the African champions sure gave a hard time to the much more experienced North Americans. The Okayu brothers, Ogun (Rhinoceros, C/F) and Harmonie (Rhinoceros, F/G), were vital in keeping the game close after Canada pushed hard on the offense in the 1st half - their captain and star shooting guard François Martineau (Golden Retriever, G) posting three straight three-pointers in the first quarter alone. FBA draft prospect Estelle Tomou (Mandrill, F/C) stunned the Canadians when she managed to convert a tail shot off an offensive rebound after a missed attempt from the older Okayu. The Cameroonians proved to be a forced to be reckoned with on the defensive side, reserve center Abanda Sadjo (Gazelle, C) making the most of his limited time to score 10 points and 8 rebounds in less than 15 minutes of play. Nevertheless, it was all for naught as a last second three-pointer from Tyrone Gale (Horse, G/F) put the game off reach and averted the possibility of going into overtime.

People were curious to see whether Jake Turner's (Red Fox, F/C) recent amazing condition he displayed during the 2020 FBA Finals, where the vulpine won his first championship as well as a Finals MVP award, would translate to the 2020 Olympic tournament. The answer, at least this far, seems to be yes - Great Britain kicking off their campaign by beating the French side 117-99 in an all-European match-up. The game began with a strong offensive impact from both teams - Julian Cross-Kiraly (Saluki, G) and D'Angelo MacQuilkin (Lion, G) surpassing each other in sharpshooting feats as they scored over and over from behind the arc. Despite putting a way less experienced team than the one who got silver medal in 2016, the young Brits kept up with France until late in the third quarter and pulled away in the fourth - Turner's talent under the rim easily getting the best of Pierre Caro (Fossa, C), his double-double of 26 points, 13 rebounds helping GB to an 18-point win that puts them at 2nd place in their group. France will need to regroup and come out stronger on Thursday for their next game against Canada.

Great expectations were placed onto the debut of the reigning champion of #TeamUS and their first game against the Netherlands, thousands of local furs packing the Furry Olympic Dome to see the biggest FBA stars step up for Olympic glory. The young American side struggled in a fast-paced first quarter, Debbie Michaels (Mouse, G) leading the Dutch charge as both Leon Delmont (Cougar, G) and Narkissa Kassius (Ringtail Lemur, G) stumbled right off the blocks. However, the USA managed to pull away once the reserves took the court, nine players ending up in double digits as coach Angus MacPherson (Highland Bull) kept the minute distribution pretty even between the starters and the rest of the team. After a 71-38 partial in the 2nd and 3rd quarter, the US eased up in the 4th - coasting to an easy 32-point win against a team that never managed to bother them. Terry O'Toole (Irish Wolfhound, F/G) had a great outing in his first game donning the stars and stripes, the Albany canine posting a near triple double with 20 points, 10 assists and 6 rebound. Delmont wasn't that far behind with 14 points and 14 assists, both players staking a claim for a spot on the podium with a whole lot of basketball left to play.

What seemed like a fairly undemanding first game against Argentina turned a lot more serious for the 2016 Furry Olympics bronze medalists of Australia as one of their star players, Tasmanian devil Wayne Kirkpatrick (Tasmanian Devil, F) got sidelined with a forearm strain mere minutes after the jump ball. It was all it took for the South Americans, who'd started the game on a 2-10 run, to catch a second wind - Valentin Montenegro (Llama/Vicuna, G), a talented local whose FBA stint lasted just a year before he retreated to play competitively in his country of origin and assist his family's business, leading the charge as Argentina closed the first half down by just seven points. However, Australia proved their superiority in the second half, recently retired FBA veteran Barnaby Talako-Jazz (Shark C/F) and young talent Andrew McDonald-Rainbow (Australian Magpie, G) completely overwhelming the Argentinean defense as the team from Down Under managed to overcome the loss of Kirkpatrick and win the game, 107 to 92.

The first major upset of the round-robin stage at the 2020 Olympic Games was never in doubt as Cameroon came out to a blazing start, only trailing after the first basket of the game and never looking back. Regis Hounsou (G/Gaboon Viper) scored 8 of his 17 points in the 1st quarter as the Cameroonians stormed out to a 30-16 lead after the 1st quarter, while Estelle Tomou (F/Mandrill) took charge and led the way with 22 points and a game-high 14 rebounds as they held the runners-up at the 2018 Euros to only 11 points in the 4th. Julian Cross-Kiraly (G/Saluki) led all scorers with 25, but the rest of the French shooters were held in check as no one else scored more than 11. The discipline of the Cameroonians was a key to their success as they were called for only 11 personal fouls, while earning 39 attempts at the free throw line. With this critical victory, Cameroon hopes to build up momentum and carry it into their next game, while a France squad that many saw as a lock to make it to the medal round is 0-3 and in danger of being eliminated in the opening round. The next game is a must-win for the French if they are to salvage a respectable showing.

Lots of expectations were piled upon the game between Sweden and the United States, as archrivals Scoonie Barrett (Otter, F/C) and Sterling Bengtzing (Marbled Polecat, C/F) took the court against each other for the first time while clad in their national colours. Less predictably, the supremacy of Group B was also at stake as both team got to this game still unbeaten on the tail of two solid wins.

From the very first minute the two mustelid behemoths went at each other's throats, Scoonie coming out on top in the first half as the combined power of the American starters made quick work of the challengers. The USA tried to exploit their shooting from outside, though Narkissa Kassius (Ringtail Lemur, G) and Terry O'Toole (Irish Wolfhound, F/G) got away with a combined 5-in-17 (29%) shooting performance. After ending the first half down 22 points, the Swedes scraped through that deficit in the third thanks to Sterling and point guard Vendela Malmqvist (Rabbit, G), bringing the deficit back to single digits before the USA opened it again in the fourth. Sterling and Scoonie's dominance battle ended up with an effective tie (15 points and 9 rebounds for the polecat against 12 points and 11 rebounds for the otter) but Kassius' 21 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists and 3 steals won the day for the reigning champions. Sweden persists at 2nd place in Group B, setting up nicely for a potential qualification to knockout phase with two games left to play.

The Koreans, seemingly in high spirits after their upset win against Australia, opened up to a small lead in the first quarter but trailed to the Argentineans in the second - the latter's frontcourt of Sebastian Kosciusko (Toucan, F) and Antonio Garza (Milkweed Locust, C) easily overpowering Korean Basketball league players Park Hanmin (Tiger, C/F) and Seol Eunyoung (Pigeon, C) under the rim. A game turning moment happened early in the 3rd quarter, as Kosciusko remained on the ground after colliding with Seol for a loose rebound; it was later revealed that the bird suffered a leg inflammation that made it impossible for him to continue playing, young reserve Sabrina Zachmann (Maned Wolf, C/F) needing to step up her game and take the court in his stead. Korea seized on the chance and closed the deal thanks to some optimal shooting from Derek Kim (Kkachi, G), the avian shooting 6-in-7 from outside on his way to score 29 points and guarantee the Asians a second win in a row - keeping their qualification chances very much alive while Argentina's are obviously languishing after three straight losses.

Ever since the Olympic tournament began, it has been clear to most insiders that the Australian team has been a shell of the one that got the bronze medal in 2016. The core five has remained the same with the honorable additions of Andrew McDonald-Rainbow (Australian Magpie, G) and Runica Falcam (Malayan Tapir, C/F) - both dependable players, but not exactly superstars. The injury of Wayne Kirkpatrick (Tasmanian Devil, F) was just one more nail in the coffin, as washed up free agent Alan Murphy (Kangaroo, F) was forced to suit up in his replacement.

With these premises, what should have been an easy game against the Netherlands became a miserable experience for the Oceanian champions. Debbie Michaels (Mouse, G), a young rodent who missed on a FBA roster spot in 2014 and found herself playing in the D-League first and European leagues later, was again the star of the show as she posted 28 points (9/18 from the field, 3/9 from behind the arc) in a near-repeat of her convincing opening game against the United States. Christian Ashbury (Peacock Mantis Shrimp, G), Australia's leading scorer, could do little as the Dutch built to a double-digit lead early on and never relinquished it - winning the game 102-87 and hoisting themselves into 4th place in the overall group standings. If the tournament ended today, Australia wouldn't qualify to the 2nd round: it remains to be seen if Kirkpatrick can recover in time for their next game against Sweden.

The last stop for France to catch the qualification train couldn't come with a better opponent than Puerto Rico, the North American team still reeling from the injury that sidelined their starting shooting guard Bayley Rivera (Gray Wolf, G) for the rest of the Games. However, the wheel was clearly not turning in its favor when Julian Cross-Kiraly (Saluki, G), their most representative player, was forced out of the court after Leonidas López (Rabbit, F) stepped on his tail during a heated battle over a loose ball. He was not to return for the rest of the game, capping his contribution at a still impressive 14 points in just 7.4 minutes.

France's starters were asked to step up as their star player went down, and they did. Exploiting an unusually cold streak from Vera La Tiérra (Red Fox, G), by far the strongest on the Puerto Rican side, they built on a lead that ended up stretching double digits. Bethany Smythes (Barn Owl, G) was especially effective from outside, posting 19 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists in her route to getting her first PotG during these Games. Despite a valiant showing by Horacio McCrohon-Blanco (Black and White Cat, F/G), a dependable veteran whose FBA career got cut short nearly a decade ago, Puerto Rico went down 92-85 - France managing to get their first victory in the tournament and keeping their hopes alive in the meanwhile, as the Latinos secure themselves a spot in the knockout phase. It remains to be seen whether Cross-Kiraly can recover in time for the deciding game between France and Japan - if he doesn't, the Europeans could easily miss out on a place in the top8.

Yet pundits and insiders were mostly in agreement that the most they could aspire was a 2nd place behind Great Britain in their group, Jake Turner's (Red Fox, C/F) amazing form being listed as a potential threat for any team in the competition. The Canadians proved they were wrong.

From the moment the game started, Canada ran away with a commanding lead and never relinquished. As the trio of François Martineau (Golden Retriever, G), Yves Carbonneau (Arctic Fox, G/F) and Kevin Malka (Giant Pangolin, F) racked up shot after easy shot, Turner had one of his worst games in a long time - his shooting performance, a mere 1-in-7 from the field, being abysmal when compared to his recent outings. D'Angelo MacQuilkin (Lion, G) was seemingly rattled by their opponent's efficiency - the muscular feline posting just 4 points (2-in-6 from the field) as the scoring burden ended up falling mostly on Arther Selby's (Rabbit, G) shoulders. Canada never relented in their offense, winning the game by an astounding 31-point deficit and earning themselves the mathematical certainty of getting 1st in their group. On the Brits' side, this bitter loss means a likely 2nd seed and a much-needed call to regroup before their last, and ultimately meaningless game against Cameroon.

After their emphatic win over France, Cameroon were looking to keep up the momentum against the hosts Japan...and for the first quarter, it looked like they were going to keep rolling behind the efforts of Brigitte Ebouaney (Caracal, G) and Estelle Tomou (Mandrill, F/C), and were out to a 13-point lead after the 1st quarter. Tomou led the Cameroonians with 18 points, while Regis Hounsou (Gaboon Viper, G/F) had 15 before retiring on fouls, and Adjatay Ngo (Bushbuck, F) contributed with 10 points off the bench. But the tide shifted when Japan finished the half on an 18-3 run, and with momentum and the decidedly partisan supporters on their side, the "Black Hayabusa" never looked back as they took a 59-58 lead into the halftime break. Led by strong backcourt play from Ren Inoue (Tosa Inu, G) and Shirley Takamoto (Jaguar, G/F), who had 24 and 20 points each, the Japanese seized the game in the 2nd half to take a comfortable decision, with Takeru Ishijima (Tiger, F) asserting himself and finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds. They also took advantage of a shockingly woeful performance by the Okayu siblings, with Ogun Okayu (Rhinoceros, C/F) going just 2-of-11 from the field. His sister, Harmonie Okayu (Rhinoceros, F/G), fared even worse as she went 2-for-17 and 1-for-10 from 3-point distance, and was visibly frustrated at points with her performance. All the while, the Hawaii Kahunas' frontcourt of Scoonie Barrett (Otter, F/C) and Zack Tate (Zorilla, C) was a little quiet this time, getting overpowered by Korean center Seol Eunyoung (Pigeon, C). The female avian had yet another solid game, scoring 23 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists while holding Tate at just 9 points and 4 rebounds.

With South Korea closing the deficit in the 2nd and 3rd quarter, unlikely hero Jonathan Lawyer (Meerkat, F/G) was tasked with saving the stars and stripes from an embarrassing loss. Lawyer was clutch from outside the arc, scoring 4 straight three-pointers in his limited time and closing the game with 23 points, 6 rebound and 1 assist. The Koreans pushed Derek Kim (Kkachi, G) hard, but it wasn't enough to snatch the victory from the Americans' jaws as the 2016 gold medalists won their fourth straight game 107-103. It'll certainly be of consolation to the Asian team that the results from the other games certify their qualification to the 2nd round, making up for the disappointment of four years ago where they left the competition with just a single win against Brazil to their name.

With Wayne Kirkpatrick (Tasmanian Devil, F) back on full-time duty after getting sidelined with an injury during their opener against Argentina, Australia was in dire need of a victory to bolster their chances to survive the group phase. It wasn't meant to be, though, as the surprising Swedish team came on top of a closely-fought game - securing 2nd place in Group B with a last-second 97-96 win against the Oceanians.

Before the Olympics started, there was much discussion on whether Sweden's core could match Sterling Bengtzing's (Marbled Polecat, C/F) world-class level. Although no less than five players on the team currently figure on a FBA roster, the American-born mustelid is the only one who's achieved some degree of success in his tenure within the league. Yet time after time, we've seen other players step up to the occasion - after Vendela Malmqvist (Rabbit, G), who scored 36 points in Sweden's bashing of the Netherlands, it fell to Sakarias Ekholm (Transvaal Lion, C), Bengtzing's frontcourt partner, to drive Sweden's offence with a solid 22 points, 11 rebounds double-double. The Australian's heavyweights were quite spotty from the field, Barnaby Talako-Jazz (Shark, C/F) being the exception with 18 points, 9 rebounds - still ways from his usual output, and not enough to save Australia from elimination as Runica Falcam's (Malayan Tapir, C/F) last second's winning shot bounced on the rim then into Ekholm's waiting paws.

In 2016, the South Americans had a great tournament - qualifying from their group with 3rd seed, then losing by a mere 5-point deficit in the quarter-finals against Australia (another Tokyo 2020 casualty). Meanwhile, Christiaan Hengst was the only Dutch player on a FBA roster, the nation's Olympic bid being thwarted by way more solid European contenders like Russia and Germany.

However, it was in the same year that the Netherlands' seed towards basketball greatness was planted - as Jona Vastenhout (Beech Marten, G) got chosen by the San Jose Thrust as the 7th pick of the 2016 FBA Draft, while the nation's main European team, the Amsterdam Royals, got to the finals of the EFBL tournament only to lose narrowly against Spain's Real Madrid. Four years later, the Dutch have become solid international contenders and are exploiting the Olympic platform to display the extent of their growth - something they stressed during their game against a washed-up Argentinean side, which they soundly defeated by a 15-point margin after a strong performance from Vastenhout and Jacobus van Oirschot (Dutch Hare, F). To decide their final placement in the standings as well as their next opponent, the last game against South Korea will be crucial for the Dutch team - while Argentina will have to try saving face against Sweden, their premature elimination from the Olympic tournament now all but a certainty.

It was late in the afternoon as Canada and Puerto Rico took the court, the two American teams fighting for the last spot in the Olympic finals. The Canadians have led an exemplary tournament this far, winning five of the six games they played by fifteen points or more; Puerto Rico’s path was decidedly rockier, but they showed concrete signs of brilliance under the lead of FBA superstar Vera La Tiérra (Red Fox, G) – many players stepping up to the vulpine’s level as they defeated seemingly stronger sides such as Japan and Sweden.

La Tiérra was electric early in the first, the vixen having provocatively tweeted before the game her desire to give Canada “a run for their money, maybe even more” (cit.) The Puerto Ricans did just that, immediately jumping into a small lead as they exploited the combined power of Vera and veteran small forward Horacio McCrohon-Blanco (Black and White Cat, F/G). Ever since the beginning of the tournament, the 34-year old feline has being leaving his all on the court in a bid to give his nation a medal – tackling stronger and more experienced opponents such as Yves Carbonneau (Arctic Fox, G/F) without the slightest fear. Canada had to work hard to pull back, the lead going back and forth throughout the 1st half before they managed to get on a positive run in the tail end of the 2nd quarter. As both teams filed into the tunnel, the North Americans were leading by 8 over Puerto Rico, 61-53 the score.

It was Canada’s game to lose and the players donning the white-and-red jerseys knew it well. Both Carbonneau and Natalie Bellemare (Atlantic Puffin, C/F) excelled on offense in the 3rd, extending their team’s lead at the price of a few extra fouls. The Puerto Ricans hung on, but they seemed to have no solution to counter their opponent’s well-tried plays – Carol Quiñones (Wolf, F/C) being the main beacon of hope in a game that quickly seemed to be going south, the lupine posting a double-double of 18 points, 16 rebounds and 3 assists in less than 26 minutes of play.

The Canadians’ early foul trouble was not to be discounted, as Carbonneau and Bellemare left the field in quick succession after posting their sixth personal. Both Quiñones and McCrohon-Blanco went repeatedly to the line, their nearly flawless shooting still not enough to contrast the Canadian reserves – Lauren Fash (Five-lined Skink, G/F) exploiting her added playtime by posting two consecutive three-pointers late in the 4th. As the buzzer sounded throughout the Furry Olympic Dome, Canada celebrated their 119-106 victory against Puerto Rico – Neo Tomasi’s (Leopard) team howling at the top of their lungs as they celebrated their guaranteed medal, the color soon to be decided in tomorrow’s final match-up against the United States.

One thing is certain – with this kind of opposition, Team US’ confirmation on the top of the podium is absolutely in discussion.

Bragging rights were the only thing at stake as Australia and United States took the court - the latter already sure to finish 1st in Group B, the former ready to pack their bags after a disappointing campaign. One point of interest, though, was that this was supposed to be the last game in Barnaby Talako-Jazz's (Shark, C/F) career - the shark having announced his retirement at the end of his last season upon his marriage with Dominick Talako (Albino Orca). The Australian center was clearly moved by the occasion, wanting to give his compatriots one last hurrah as he dig hard into Zack Tate (Zorilla, C) but racking some fouls early in the 1st quarter and immediately going into foul trouble.

The Americans exploited Australia's mishaps, as they've done rather successfully throughout the tournament. Narkissa Kassius (Ringtail Lemur, G) was flawless on offense, scoring 12-in-18 and a blistering 7-in-10 from outside the arc. Her strong offensive game was complemented by Scoonie Barrett (Otter, F/C) finally stepping up after a few rocky games, the big lutrine completely overpowering Runica Falcam (Malayan Tapir, C/F) and posting a double-double of 16 points and 18 rebounds. After Talako-Jazz was pulled out of the game in the beginning of the last quarter, Australia completely fell apart - the United States capping their group showing with a fifth straight win as they defeated the Aussies 123-97.

Netherlands and South Korea took the court to play for the 3rd seed in the group, and the opportunity to take on Great Britain in the quarter-finals. The Asian started off to a blistering pace, FBA stars Derek Kim (Kkachi, G) and Lee Jin-Sung (Black Bear, F) lighting up the action with crisp passes and great shooting from inside the arc. The usually solid Dutch defense was not at their peak, with the notable exception of stallion center Christiaan Hengst (Friesian Horse, C/F) - the equine making up for Debbie Michaels' (Mouse, G) and Jacobus van Oirschot's (Dutch Hare, F) off day as he terrorized the Korean players on either side of the court. At the end of the game, he'd racked up 15 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists - stopping just short of a triple-double in one of his career's best showings - something that will get a few FBA franchises looking his way as the 6-year veteran tackles free agency this summer.

Nevertheless, Korea managed to hold on their small lead and build from there, pulling away late in the fourth quarter to end up winning the game by a 12-point deficit. The Asians will get to fight the reigning silver medalists of Great Britain in the next round, while the Netherlands will try to win a spot in the semifinals by taking on Canada. Both teams don't seem to share the insiders' favors, but given their showing so far it'd be ill-judged to count them out this soon.

A sea of red and white greeted the American players as they took the court for their quarter-final against the Japan side – the home team being ready to disprove the predictions and take the reigning champions off the court with the help of their home team.

The game was pretty balanced for the first two quarters – USA maintaining a small, 8-point lead as they went into the 2nd half, their opponents exploiting a suffocating defense and great shooting skills from Ren Inoue (Tosa Inu, G) to stay in the game. Scoonie Barrett (Otter, F/C) was decidedly sluggish – the big lutrine going 1-in-11 from the field, his defensive game being equally uninspired – while Leon Delmont (Cougar, G) and Narkissa Kassius (Ringtail Lemur, G) kept up their rather good partnership, slightly outmatching the opposing backcourt of Inoue and Shirley Takamoto (Jaguar, F/G) by scoring 35 points together against the 33 from the Japanese duo.

Unfortunately, the Japanese were never able to make a strong run – ultimately succumbing to the experience of Team USA as they went into foul trouble and conceded them tons of opportunities from the line. Despite a late fouling out from Zack Tate (Zorilla, C), the Americans held on to their lead on their way to winning 105-90, earning a spot in the semifinals against the winner of the Great Britain – South Korea match-up.

Having finished 2nd in their group after the Canadians, team Great Britain was chomping at the bit to prove the criticism they received in the first phase was unfounded. They matched up against South Korea, a team that has grown a lot in the past four years after a group phase elimination in Rio 2016, coming quite close to the United States and providing the third best offense of the tournament this far. For most insiders, it was going to be a game to behold.

The first half was pretty tense, Arther Selby (Rabbit, G) immediately picking up from his monster game against Cameroon and proving to be a force to be reckoned with from outside the arc – the Korean backcourt of Park Hanmin (Tiger, F/C) and Seol Eunyoung (Pigeon, C) struggling to contain the young hare as he scored from pretty much everywhere, proving lethal on turnovers and fast break with the Koreans unable to match his speed. But the Asian team could count on their FBA representatives, Derek Kim (Kkachi, G) and Lee Jin-Sung (Black Bear, F) putting to a hard test even the towering Jake Turner (Red Fox, C/F) as South Korea pulled ahead by 5 at the end of 1st half, 47 to 42.

Kim opened the 2nd half with a 3-pointer that rattled the Brits, soon forced to catch up in a game that they expected to lead all throughout. The more they attempted to pull through, the more turnovers and missed opportunities they conceded to the Koreans – the ragtag group of former FBAers and national league dwellers playing with a confidence they seldom showed this far, their lead widening to 15, 20, then 25 points as Great Britain seemingly gave up trying with a full quarter still on the clock. An abysmal 33% shooting sealed their fate as South Korea claimed the win, 110 to 83 – the Asians seemingly euphoric as they get ready to tackle the USA in a historic semifinal match-up.

After nearly missing on a bronze medal in 2016, Canada has tackled the 2020 Olympics with a young, hungry team that has been highly successful in the group phase of the tournament – ending it with five wins out of five and commanding performances against valiant opponents such as Great Britain, France and Japan. Their game against the underdog of the Netherlands began in the same fashion – the starting five clearly overpowering the way less experienced Dutch side, François Martineau (Golden Retriever, G) and Kevin Malka (Giant Pangolin, F) emerging as the strongest contributors throughout the first half. Canada led by 16 as the teams went into their respective locker rooms, surprising Debbie Michaels (Mouse, G) being once more the only positive note among the Europeans. The mouse would end the game with 25 points, 10/19 from the field and 3/8 from outside the arc – restating her case for a spot on a FBA roster six years after she went undrafted and got forced to press for luck on the D-League and in European basketball.

Spurred by Michaels and Christiaan Hengst (Friesian Horse, C/F), another bright note for them during the tournament, the Dutch attempted to mount a comeback in the 2nd half – but they got defeated by the Canadians’ accuracy both under the rim and outside the area. Malka exploited a rather hot streak by extending his range, even going as far as scoring two 3-pointers in a PotG performance of 24 points and 9 rebounds. No reason to worry for Canada, as their Olympic run continues with this 112-87 victory against the Netherlands – their opponent still fighting until the last second and bowing out graciously after a rather positive outing here in Japan.

Two outsiders tackled each other in the final game of the day – both Sweden and Puerto Rico having reached the knockout phase after not competing in the 2016 Olympics. Their respective stars, Sterling Bengtzing (Marbled Polecat, C/F) and Vera La Tiérra (Red Fox, G), have proved their worth this far – but at the same time they’ve shown they’re more than willing to let their teammates shine, both team coming forward as pretty united throughout the first phase and succeeding in earning a qualification very few people would have considered possible on the eve of the tournament.

Earlier on in the first quarter, that became apparent as Ricardo Rodrigues (Black Barbary Lion, G), an FBA veteran who’s fallen by the sidelines after six years in the league yet was asked back on the starting line after the serious injury that plagued Bayley Rivera (Gray Wolf, G) during the group phase, kicked off with what probably turned into the best game of his career. The bulky feline was everywhere, playing circles around Ojvind Holmgren (Brown Squirrel, G) and even feeding of La Tiérra nicely in a couple occasions – though the vulpine didn’t have a good night, going just 1-for-6 from the field as she racked up 11 points and 5 assists in 26 minutes of play.

The game seemed a lock for Puerto Rico as they finished the first half up by 30, but Sweden valiantly fought to the end thanks to the grits and determination of Bengtzing – the marbled polecat fighting on every ball and never stopping to encourage his teammates on good plays, the Scandinavians soon starting to claw back in an unusually low-scoring second half. While the Puerto Ricans sort of lacked in concentration and grew fatigued as their starters were forced on the court for longer streaks, it was too little too late for the Swedes as Vera, Ricardo and the rest managed to claim a 97-78 win and a surprising qualification to the semifinals – where they will be facing Canada in an all-American match-up for a shot at Olympic gold.

Though the American team tackled the 2020 Furry Olympics’ basketball tournament as the prohibitive favorites, their domination hasn’t been to the same level of four years ago – a true testament to the sport’s growth and the effort many nations have made in order to thwart them from their Olympic throne. One of said nations was South Korea, whose terrific showing in the quarter-finals against Great Britain has won them a spot in the final four – making up for their group phase elimination in 2016 with one of the strongest offensive performances in the entire tournament, something that seemingly worried the American fans in the lead-up to the game.

The USA started the semifinal with determination, Leon Delmont (Cougar, G) immediately drawing the first blood off an assist from Terry O’Toole (Irish Wolfhound, F/G) – the two rising stars having cemented their worth as starters for the American team all throughout this tournament. South Korea was quick to answer as Lee Jin-Sung (Black Bear, F) muscled his way through the paint to score an easy lay-up over Scoonie Barrett (Otter, F/C). Lee was rather effective throughout the first half, spearheading the Asians’ offense against an obviously stronger American side. Together with fellow FBA dweller Derek Kim (Kkachi, G), the ursine was able to contain the opponents’ attack and keep his team focused – no matter how the gap between the two teams kept ballooning, reaching 19 points (63-44 in the USA’s favor) after the end of the 1st half.

The teams returned onto the court anxious to prove themselves, the following quarter being rather balanced as the Americans kept the Koreans on a tight leash – their lead never getting under single digits, and even reaching 20 as Narkissa Kassius (Ringtail Lemur, G) scored an unguarded three-pointer to close the 3rd quarter. Lee and Kim wanted no part of that, though, as the two friends started ramping up the aggression against Team US – the avian repeatedly serving Lee with spot-on assists, allowing the ursine to post one of the best games of his career as he ended with 31 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

The Americans took very little to go into disarray, Coach Angus MacPherson (Highland Bull) being forced to call an emergency time-out as Kim was able to draw a 4-point play when O’Toole clumsily fouled on his shot from outside – the canine being forced to the bench shortly after as the sixth was called on him, Jonathan Lawyer (Meerkat, G) immediately taking his spot at small forward. Once more, it fell to Kassius to lead the Americans out of their rut: the lemur’s scoring took off late in the 4th, a late bonus allowing her and Delmont to go multiple times to the charity stripe (they scored a combined 19 out of 20 free throws). The Koreans’ astounding clawback kept the game in contention for a long time, before a three-pointer from Lawyer with just 9.3 seconds on the clock certified the Americans’ victory, 110 to 107.

It was late in the afternoon as Canada and Puerto Rico took the court, the two American teams fighting for the last spot in the Olympic finals. The Canadians have led an exemplary tournament this far, winning five of the six games they played by fifteen points or more; Puerto Rico’s path was decidedly rockier, but they showed concrete signs of brilliance under the lead of FBA superstar Vera La Tiérra (Red Fox, G) – many players stepping up to the vulpine’s level as they defeated seemingly stronger sides such as Japan and Sweden.

La Tiérra was electric early in the first, the vixen having provocatively tweeted before the game her desire to give Canada “a run for their money, maybe even more” (cit.) The Puerto Ricans did just that, immediately jumping into a small lead as they exploited the combined power of Vera and veteran small forward Horacio McCrohon-Blanco (Black and White Cat, F/G). Ever since the beginning of the tournament, the 34-year old feline has being leaving his all on the court in a bid to give his nation a medal – tackling stronger and more experienced opponents such as Yves Carbonneau (Arctic Fox, G/F) without the slightest fear. Canada had to work hard to pull back, the lead going back and forth throughout the 1st half before they managed to get on a positive run in the tail end of the 2nd quarter. As both teams filed into the tunnel, the North Americans were leading by 8 over Puerto Rico, 61-53 the score.

It was Canada’s game to lose and the players donning the white-and-red jerseys knew it well. Both Carbonneau and Natalie Bellemare (Atlantic Puffin, C/F) excelled on offense in the 3rd, extending their team’s lead at the price of a few extra fouls. The Puerto Ricans hung on, but they seemed to have no solution to counter their opponent’s well-tried plays – Carol Quiñones (Wolf, F/C) being the main beacon of hope in a game that quickly seemed to be going south, the lupine posting a double-double of 18 points, 16 rebounds and 3 assists in less than 26 minutes of play.

The Canadians’ early foul trouble was not to be discounted, as Carbonneau and Bellemare left the field in quick succession after posting their sixth personal. Both Quiñones and McCrohon-Blanco went repeatedly to the line, their nearly flawless shooting still not enough to contrast the Canadian reserves – Lauren Fash (Five-lined Skink, G/F) exploiting her added playtime by posting two consecutive three-pointers late in the 4th. As the buzzer sounded throughout the Furry Olympic Dome, Canada celebrated their 119-106 victory against Puerto Rico – Neo Tomasi’s (Leopard) team howling at the top of their lungs as they celebrated their guaranteed medal, the color soon to be decided in tomorrow’s final match-up against the United States.

One thing is certain – with this kind of opposition, Team US’ confirmation on the top of the podium is absolutely in discussion.

In most sports competitions, third place finals are usually seen as a minor affair – something to quench the appetite before the gold medal match’s main course. At the Olympics, though, medals are in play for the winners of said game – and this time, a lot of players on the South Korean team had a further motivation to do well as they walked on the field for their match-up against Puerto Rico. South Korean laws say that winning an Asian Games gold medal or an Olympic medal of any color will exempt all male athletes from military duties, and for the players who weren’t on the court during South Korea’s 2014 Furry Asian Games’ run – namely 19-year-old Mok Seungmin (Bull, G and 20-year-old Cho Haneul (Amur Leopard, F/G) – this was a potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that could offer them a brighter future and a stable professional career.

Puerto Rico came into the game with the opposite issue, the Latino American team facing an invaluable chance to fulfill a dream for a number of veteran players – included FBA All-Star Vera La Tiérra (Red Fox, G), who has longed for some kind of international recognition after ten years of professional career. No young talent on the team seems poised to exceed her marks, but the cohesion and chemistry of Milko Martínez’s (Green Parrot) group have been unrivaled throughout the entire tournament and even managed to get this team of ragtags fighting for an Olympic medal.

The Koreans started off well, though – Lee Jin-Sung (Black Bear, F) continuing to display his perfect shape as he opened the scores with a perfect alley-oop dunk off a pass from Lim Poong (Opossum, G). Their opponents were slightly taken aback, missing some shots before La Tiérra managed to find her mark with an 18-foot dagger. South Korea was more consistent on defense, avian center Seol Eunyoung (Pigeon, C) capping a very positive tournament with a terrific performance that brought her a massive block on Carol Quiñones (Wolf, F/C) – the lupine being rattled by impact and struggling to get into the groove for minutes after, contributing to the Asians pulling ahead and ending the 1st half with a 60-41 lead.

A big result standing at arm’s reach, South Korea stumbled off the blocks early in the 3rd quarter – two straight three-pointers from La Tiérra bringing the game back within single digits and forcing Coach Park Hyunsook (Musk Deer) to call an emergency time-out. It was all it took to stop the Latinos’ momentum, Derek Kim (Kkachi, G) and Lim answering with back-to-back treys of their own and helping their side to take back control. With ten minutes left to play, South Korea led 82 to 59 – their bronze medal victory now very much a formality.

Martínez decided to leave his starters back on the court, hoping their combined power could make up for the talent gap between the two teams. It somehow worked, the Puerto Ricans managing to scrap a few points from the massive deficit – helped as well by some lazy plays from South Korea as they probably started celebrating too early. The struggle to keep focused was an issue for the Koreans all throughout, and it became apparent late in the 4th when another clutch shot from Vera managed to bring their opponents back within eight. They wouldn’t be denied, though – a jump shot from Seol and a late 3-pointer from sharpshooter Mok allowing them to ride out the Puerto Ricans’ Hail Mary, one last shot from Ricardo Rodriguez (Black Barbary Lion, G) ending in the rafters as the South Koreans celebrated their first Olympic medal ever in co-ed basketball.

An elated Lee Jin-Sung was the first to reach the press zone, a big flag draped across his shoulders as he commented his satisfaction at conquering such a high target. “This is a historic day for basketball in South Korea. We have defeated massive odds on our way to this incredible result, and I know what happened on the court today will be of inspiration to a generation of young Korean ballers.”

South Korea wins the bronze medal against Puerto Rico, 98-86; Seol Eunyoung earns Player of the Game honors with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block.

Arena: Furry Olympic Dome

Player of the Game: Tyrone Gale - 25 pts, 8 ast, 1 stl, 2 blk

The lead-up to the Olympic final was slightly overshadowed by the public airing of grievances between American player Wendy Brown (Saber-toothed Tiger, G) and British superstar D’Angelo MacQuilkin (Lion, G), the feline couple reportedly breaking up on Friday after Great Britain’s thunderous loss against South Korea. This reportedly affected mood in Team US’ camp, several players getting quite incensed by the distraction as pretty much every sports reporter huddled out of their training grounds to get the latest news on the break-up of one of the longest-running and most publicized FBA relationships.

For the United States, the mood was pretty much “win or else”, no one willing to settle for silver after a decidedly lackluster campaign. With the amount of star power on Angus MacPherson’s (Highland Bull) team, small wins against South Korea and Japan weren’t deemed enough of an achievement and raised heavy questioning on the entire expedition. On the contrary, the young Canadian team received rave reviews – the entire group finding their footing after their 3-point win on Cameroon, François Martineau (Golden Retriever, G) and Kevin Malka (Giant Armadillo, F) coming through as the cornerstones of the team with veteran Yves Carbonneau (Arctic Fox, G/F) providing some much needed experience to a squad that shared just three twelfths with the one that spectacularly lost on the bronze medal in 2016.

Ever since the first possession, the United States were hell bent in proving Canada they had no desire of abdicating from their throne – opening to an easy slasher from Leon Delmont (Cougar, G) and a three-pointer from Narkissa Kassius (Ringtail Lemur, G), the Canadians being forced to play catch-up from the very first second. Neo Tomasi (Leopard) instructed his team to focus on guarding the Americans’ backcourt, Martineau gluing himself to Kassius’ back and preventing her from getting as many scoring opportunities as she had against South Korea. Their main offensive weapon became Tyrone Gale (Horse, G), the Pittsburgh Keystones’ young stallion galloping through the court and sinking shot after shot – Delmont unable to mount a strong opposition on the equine, the cougar focusing mostly on assisting Terry O’Toole (Irish Wolfhound, F/G) and Scoonie Barrett (Otter, F/C) as they racked up points from first and second chance opportunities. At the end of the 1st quarter USA was ahead by 8 points, 28 to 20.

The 2nd quarter began on similar lines to the previous one, Canada struggling to stay in the game as the United States relied on their main contributors’ superior skills. As soon as the reserves took the court, though, the gap got visibly reduced – Lauren Fash (Five-lined Skink, G/F) giving a welcomed energy boost from the bench, the female reptile taking over at shooting guard and making the most of manifold opportunities from the charity stripe. It was late in the quarter when tragedy struck – Lance Wildfyre (Rabbit, G) remaining on the ground after colliding under the rim with Tay Delgado (Mink, G), the mink desperately trying to block the lapine as he led an unguarded fast break. The contact with Delgado projected Wildfyre forward, severely straining his neck as he fell on his left shoulder – the medical assistance lasting a few minutes as the unlucky guard was taken off the court on a stretcher, his Olympic final clearly over. The injury thwarted USA’s momentum and propelled the Canadians, ending the first half on a strong note and taking the lead with a minute to play – the score 52-47 in the latter’s favor as the players filed into the tunnel.

MacPherson’s instructions to his players to take control of the game by exploiting the mismatch between Barrett and Zack Tate (Zorilla, C) against Natalie Bellemare (Atlantic Puffin, C/F) yielded some results as the United States were quick to mend the deficit, although the Kahunas’ frontcourt was decidedly sluggish on offense – both players having gotten to Japan in non-optimal condition after a long, brutal season that forced Hawaii to an excruciating loss in the 2020 FBA Finals. It fell to Kassius and O’Toole to spearhead the American offense, the buff canine turning up the heat midway through the quarter as he won the direct comparison with Yves Carbonneau – the arctic fox looking sluggish as he ended the game with just 5 points to his name. At the end of the third quarter US was up by eight, 88 to 80, and seemed to have the upper hand going into the final stretch.

What followed can only be described as a Canadian thunderstorm, as Gale and Martineau pummeled the American defense with three straight three-pointers in the first two minutes of the last quarter – the horse an uncatchable blur as he dashed through the American defenders, both Barrett and Tate often late in their double-teaming as he drove through the post again and again. Not expecting such a forceful push from the Road Warriors, USA quickly found themselves trying to catch up – Barrett and Tate missing several opportunities on offense, while Kassius had to relent her defense on the Canadian frontcourt as she quickly went into foul trouble. Another three pointer from Edwin Griega (Canada Goose, F) brought Canada up by 5 with less than two minutes on the clock, forcing MacPherson to call a late timeout in order to reassess their next play.

Kassius spent a long time setting up the play, trying to reach Tate for an easy two – but Martineau was quick in putting his paw between the lemur and the zorilla, grabbing the ball and setting a fast break which Gale concluded with a windmill dunk. The entire stadium exploded in a massive cheer, enough for the Americans to mess up the next play and allow Canada to pull further ahead as the golden retriever went for two free throws. A few moments later, the referee’s whistle marked Canada’s gold medal win – Tomasi’s team edging the United States by 9 points in a 110-101 win.

The medal ceremony was a somber affair for the Americans, many players looking on the verge of tears as they accepted their silver medals from the IFOC representative, former Soviet fencer Valeriya Nikitina (Snow Leopard). Tyrone Gale was elected PotG – the horse ending the game with 25 points and 8 assists to his name – while François Martineau was elected Best Player of the Tournament, the prize being awarded to the canine by a commission of nine members of the IFBA and IFOC.

“It’s a dream coming true,” Martineau commented to our microphones shortly after the medal ceremony. “Every single day, we believed we could fight our way to the end and even defeat the reigning Olympic champions. We had the strongest drive of any team in this tournament, and we proved it from the first game to the last.”

“I’m sorry for our American friends…” said Kevin Malka, the giant pangolin displaying his usual modesty as he clutched his gold medal between his massive paws, “…but this victory couldn’t come at a better time for our team. I’m proud of representing the Maple Leaf on the biggest stage there is and I’m freakin’ glad to come home with this around my neck. This is for every kid who felt out of place and found his way out through his passion for sports. Work as hard as you can, believe in yourself and you’ll reap the rewards.”
