Thunder Bay Predator College
Thunder Bay Predator College is a post-secondary institution whose main campus is located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The school is most well-known for its sports teams and its reputation as a haven for predator supremacist values.
In-Character Information
History and General Information
The school was originally a provincially-funded institution, founded to cater exclusively to predator species. In later years, due to mounting threats from the government of Ontario about suspending funding unless the institution agreed to admit prey species, TBPC became privately-funded, relying largely on donations from private donors. Though admission requirements have softened, the population of the school remains heavily comprised of predator species, with omnivores and prey species making up only a small portion of the population.
Though offering a wide variety of faculties and departments, the school is best known for its programs in natural resources management.
TBPC has a reputation as a strong competitor in sports. Its various sports teams, referred to as the Apex, place consistently high in Canadian Furry Intercollegiate Sports contests. Despite this, it is rare to find their alumni performing at a professional level.
Controversies
The school has a strong reputation as a haven for predator supremacist sentiment. Even students that are predator species have reported an aggressively competitive attitude throughout the student body. Many students claim that the school subscribes to an 'alpha' mentality - where all students should constantly be competing to be the singular best.
This attitude often leads to burnout in academic programs and injury on athletic teams.
There are rumours of intense hazing rituals, as well as harassment of non-predator species. These attitudes are pushed by many fraternities, sororities, and student organizations. Independent investigations have even suggested that some of these organizations serve as on-campus recruitment for noted pred supremacist groups. While TBPC administration actively denies these allegations and has spoken out against such sentiments on several occasions, many critics have noted that they have done nothing to curtail the growth of pred supremacist attitudes at the school.
Within the city of Thunder Bay, there is devision in supporting the school. There are those that question the impact that the school is having on the city's reputation as a welcoming community. Others say that the school appeals to traditional predator values, and that it should be championed as one of the few remaining academic institutions to do so. The city in general takes great pride in TBPC's athletic performance and frequent domination in CFIS rankings.
Out-of-Character Information
The following are important notes about the setting, and should inform any characters associated with the school.
TBPC is a bad place. Good people don't do well there.
- Stereotypical bullies are championed and do well. Harassment of various types is publicly condemned, but quietly condoned.
- If somebody doesn't blend in with the rest of the predators at TBPC (either in appearance or noticeably in attitude), they have been the target of at least bullying, and at worst physical harassment and threats.
- If somebody blends in with the rest of the predators at TBPC but doesn't share their views, they have either turned a blind eye to the harassment others suffer, or spoken up and become targeted themselves.
TBPC will not meaningfully change.
- Thunder Bay Predator College is an institution that has a long history of encouraging, both overtly and subtly, pred supremacy. The people who fund and manage the school want it that way, it is engrained in the culture, and the overwhelming majority of the staff will work to keep it that way.
- A coach or a staff member might get fired. The school might issue a statement about changing. Ultimately, the school will cycle back – people that get fired find new positions on boards and advisory committees indirectly linked to the school, and the people that replace them have similar attitudes.
Actual performance is secondary to species and attitude.
- Thunder Bay Predator College cares about its image – its relationship with its donors relies on it. It isn't enough for a student or staff member to be a carnivore or an omnivore – they want people that look and think like predators.
- If a person doesn't look like a stereotypical apex predator, and doesn't behave in a way that puts themselves first at the cost of others, it is unlikely they will be on the starting line of the team. They will not be a captain. The team will choose noticeably weaker players that fit these criteria over better players that don't.
TBPC burns through people.
- TBPC believes fully in individualism. It does not offer support to its students or athletes, and its students and athletes generally don't support each other. This is the type of school that will apply as much pressure as possible on somebody, and not worry if it breaks them physically or mentally.
- The school has a reputation for students getting burnt out, and players getting burnt out or injured.
