Biography

From the day he was born, Seth Callaway has been a goofball. Born to a NASA astronomer and a night-shift paramedic, Seth was surrounded by nerd culture from birth, raised by his mother Marie while his father Thomas worked at Kennedy Space Center about an hour away from their home in Orlando, Florida. Because of her work requirements, his mother would take him after school to a rec center that his uncle (her brother) owned and ran, and while she lifted weights and did copious cardio workouts, he played basketball to cut down some weight (having always been a rotund boy growing up, and still being one, if we’re going to be honest about it.) It didn’t take long after discovering the sport for him to discover that he was a natural at it. For starters, he was tall, stocky, and hard to stop once he got going. Secondly, he had a sort of natural affinity to the sport, improving at a lightning pace, with the help of his third point: He had a coach. His uncle, Derrick, would help him learn everything from the basic fundamentals to the complex handles and psychological strategy the pros use on the court. Derrick had been a starting shooting guard in high school, even got a D-II scholarship, but would end up working through a small public university instead of taking the free ride and having to play in a sport that, if he were to be honest, he detested the thought of having to play all the time. Derrick watched as Seth excelled in the game he had left behind, proud that his teachings could finally bring someone else some satisfaction. Eventually, Derrick was playing in youth leagues, then middle school sports, where he would start for his eighth-grade team and finally find his spot as a bigfur power forward. His team would go undefeated that season. In high school, Derrick found his academic calling; AP science and mathematics classes were on his schedule every semester. Turns out, he was a natural for robotics and engineering. He would join his school’s Robotics Club, and make some great friends there, even though his number one passion was always basketball. He would start his high school career as a sixthfur but would very soon become a starter for the middling team at Winter Park High School. Seth would end up being the tool Coach Burrus needed to turn a middling team into a winning team. Seth would end up never winning a championship in high school, but it was not for a lack of intense trying and three very successful seasons, with two of those seasons seeing them reach the Final Four in the FHSAA Championships. To quote Seth himself: “We were surrounded by amazing teams, and we still made them work for every basket they scored. In my opinion, that’s all you can ask for.” His work, both on and off the court, caught the attention of the Mustelid University of Central Florida, who quickly shot him a scholarship opportunity, which was just as hastily accepted by Seth and his family. At MUCF, Seth declared a Robotics Engineering major and joined the Honors College, earning him the nickname of “The Brainiac Baller” for his mixed bag of skills and passions (always lighthearted, of course). He would also be the face that turned MUCF into an FCAA contender, putting on shows with his incredible drives and immense power in the paint, with his dunks especially drawing crowds from all over the country (and world, as was proven on an FSPN broadcast one time) to watch him threaten to smash backboards with his might and height. His willingness to attack any threat with everything he had earned him the nickname “Broadside,” named after the naval maneuver of firing every gun on one side of a vessel at the same time. His skills off the court earned him a Magna Cum Laude Honors Bachelor’s degree in robotic engineering in Summer 2025, with him putting his name in the FBA Draft hat right after. However, on the day he confirmed his intent to be in the draft, his uncle Derrick, the man who taught him the game he was about to make a possible career on, suddenly died of a stroke at the age of 51. Thus, he changed his desired jersey number from 96 to 51, in honor of Derrick (who also happened to wear that number in high school.)
