The Rocky Mountain Royals were founded in 1974 as a semi-professional team. In 1979, it was incorporated into the FBA as a professional team. Then-head coach Brock "The Crock" Thiessen worked hard to prepare his team for the big time. The team had an infamously long losing streak starting out. Early in the 1980-1981, they lost their captain Bryn Mastiffson to a knee injury. In their 32-season existance as one of the main league, they made the playoffs only once, in 2010. They were eliminated in the first round by the Dakota Bikers. Since the 2011-2012 season, they were deregulated to the FBADL and remained there ever since.
