Biography

Born in Dragør, Denmark, Luther grew up in what could have been called a paradise. Only a 30 minute drive from Copenhagen, Dragør was a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. To Luther’s parents, it was a perfect place to raise a child.

The young jackalope’s childhood was as ordinary as could be. The only thing extraordinary about their child was that he seemed to be a fast learner. He was walking sooner than others in their village. He was even speaking sooner than most. At 5, Luther’s father decided to immerse his son in fishing. His father never saw his son smile more than when the two of them were on their boat. Growing up, Luther took any chance he could get to be out on the water.

His childhood up until 10 years of age was relatively normal for the kids in his area. Like most of them, he had gotten into his countries favorite/popular sports of soccer and danish handball. For the most part, it seemed like Luther was thriving. He excelled in academics, was quick to learn the mechanics of the sports he engaged in, and even went to teach himself things that weren’t in his age range. However, all of a sudden, Luther stopped speaking. It caught his parents off guard as their son’s demeanor changed tenfold. Their once expressive, talkative son, was now stone-faced and mute.

Luther’s parents brought him to multiple therapists, fearing something had happened to him to turn him into his new expressionless self. But to their surprise, it was revealed that their son did everything of his own free will. Before stopping all manners of speech, he had began taking up sign language. Now his parents finally knew why. Most thought that Luther’s choice in being silent would bring a halt to his life. However, he went on just fine.

Though, going mute would not be the only change Luther would make in his life. At 15, he began to indulge himself more in things that were, well, non-danish. He wanted to broaden his horizons and look into multiple hobbies/interests. One of which that caught his eye was american basketball. He spent that entire summer really getting into everything about the game. He told his parents of his decision to then drop soccer and handball for basketball. Though he often had to commute to Copenhagen to find teams to play with, as his village didn’t have any. But this was no problem to the jackalope and if anything, it then ignited the spark in him for travel. For his 16th birthday, he requested from his parents the chance for them all to travel abroad - to which they obliged.

Once back in Denmark, Luther focused himself on the passions that fueled his life. Basketball of course became one of his main ones, even going as far as to replace the yearning love he’d had for being out on his father’s boat - soaking in the life of being out on the water. To Luther, this was his way of sort of getting a foot in the door to break from his Danish norm. Not for any misunderstandings though, as the jackalope loved his home country and his birthplace of Dragør especially. But he had long gotten into the excitement of branching out and wanting to do more. He knew he could do more. He aspired to get out of his monotonous life and basketball was that chance for him. Luther fully devoted himself to the game. He even went as far as making a daily commute to Copenhagen to do so. At his request, he transferred schools so as to be on a high school basketball team. During his freshman year, he played at the shooting guard/small forward position. But then during his sophomore year, the jackalope got an unexpected growth spurt that took him to 7’0; in turn thrusting him into the Power Forward/Center position. But by the end of highschool, he was 7’6 and played solely at the Center position. It was during his junior and senior year, playing at C/PF, mostly Center, that he began to get noticed by scouts.

As one scout wrote by the end of Luther's senior year, “Though no words are spoken, his presence is always felt on the court. He moves with such speed that you could not not notice him. He isn’t afraid to get rough or use his body and height to his advantage. One of the most intimidating centers Denmark has produced by far. Wolfpack or Bakken would be lucky to have him - especially right out of high school as it would give them time to mold the potential this young player definitely has.”

And as he graduated, the jackalope was met with multiple offers by college teams as well as Danish basketball league teams. Luther would decide on going to college, as he decided on wanting to further his education with a degree. Though, his college of choice was controversial. Luther had picked a college in Copenhagen that was 90% carnivore/predator. In fact, even the basketball team, Wolfpack, had only one non-carnivore on it. Luther would come to be the 2nd. He brought a fierce attitude to the team and was quick to show just how he could play and fit in. At games, the team was known to howl when huddled up. Luther was known to sign or mouth the howling.

He was only with Wolfpack for half of his freshman year before he transferred to another college and joined their team, the Bakken Bears. Yet another controversial pick as this college had also been known for its heavy predator body of students. The team though, this time around, had at least 3 non-carnivore players. Luther brought to them the same fiery passion as he did with Wolfpack.

Scouts continued to pay attention to his efforts though and at the end of his freshman year, they approached the now 18 year old. Luther had no hesitations in going to join the EFBL. Simply put to him by scouts, “Why waste your talent in the college basketball teams that meant nothing?” as Denmark was not known, nor had ever been known to have extraordinary basketball teams - save for the EFBL perhaps. Soccer and Danish Handball were the countries popular and thriving sports. If Luther really wanted to do something more with his skills, to utilize them further, then joining the only hope in danish basketball, their EFBL team, would be the way to go.

In the EFBL he would prove himself a dominant, thriving force. It was the first time Denmark would have such a phenomenal talent. In fact, it was the first time Denmark would have someone at Luther’s size and, most surprising, the fact he was a non-carnivore. The Jackalope played hard and fast. He wasn’t afraid to get up close and personal with other players - especially when they were of the predator/carnivore type. Luther thrust himself into, if not EFBL in general spotlight, danish spotlight. In all the times of being losers, it finally seemed as though they would become EFBL contenders once more.

All seemed to be going well for the jackalope until an incident occurred near the end of his first year with his EFBL team. While parting ways with the lion he had been seeing at the time, he was attacked from behind. Thankfully, Luther was quick to react and moved to get out of the way which resulted in the strike to his back not being as deep as it could have been. Though the injury put the jackalope out of games, it wouldn't stop him from continuing to train and workout. For Luther, there was no sense in letting something stop you from being in the best condition you could be in. Especially for the goals he had set in mind.

As soon as Luther was able to get back into games, he began to whip his team into shape. Luther was determined to make a name for his Danish team and to prove that talent, especially for basketball, could and would come from Denmark.

One year of relentless hard work and the team climbed the rankings. It wasn’t enough that year to make the championships. But in the coming year, with a newly changed name to the Copenhagen Cygni, the team would become an unstoppable powerhouse. Luther soon became a legend among danish EFBL players. Even in the EFBL in general, rumors were heard about the ‘giant bunny’. What made him standout was the fact that, to those around him, they knew he wouldn’t just settle for the EFBL. He was pushing for bigger and better things. It was only a matter of time.

2019 and the Copenhagen Cygni preserved through the EFBL finals. This time, they were going for that championship title. Backed by their phenomenal starting lineup, a bench that could provide, and their star center who seemed unstoppable, it looked like Denmark really would take the title after 36 years of being nobodies. All they had to do was beat their final rivals, just as eager to win it all, Dinamo NutRio Milano.

Just when the Cygni seemed to have it in the bag, in the lead 3-2, tragedy struck. In game 6 of the EFBL finals, during the 3rd quarter, the Cygni’s star jackalope was rushed off the courts with an MCL injury. With their best defender and rebounder now out for the rest of the game, the Cygni quickly fell apart. Game 6 was won by Milano. In game 7, despite their best efforts, and Luther even pushing his coach to let him play, the Copenhagen Cygni lost. The EFBL finals belonged to Dinamo NutRio Milano.

Even despite a loss, he was still a success in Denmark, having the Rookie of the year with his team, countless other awards, and even winning defensive player of the year. While the defeat no doubt was a hit to Luther, it was also more reason for him to finally make the decision in leaving the EFBL to pursue the FBA. It was time to achieve bigger things. It was time to show the FBA what this Dane could bring to the table. A storm was coming by the name of Luther Kierkegaard.
