Biography
Casey Rucks began his journey to the big leagues on track. Trained early on by his father, Eddy Rucks, who had been the well-established and well-liked head coach of Alabama Mammalian University’s championship basketball team, Casey got an early start in fundamentals and expectations. When not in school, he practically lived at the university, haunting the athletics facilities and helping out his dad. For all that had been going right in Casey’s life, things were about to go deep south.
Caught up in a scandal regarding back room dealings and illegal student athlete perks that practically dismantled AMU’s athletics department, Eddy Rucks was dismissed for his involvement. The scandal stripped AMU of many of its basketball and football titles in 2006 and 2007, as well as revoking the scholarships of six prominent and promising student athletes. Eddy Rucks was never able to recover from the effects of the scandal, which effectively began the downward turn in Casey Rucks’ life at age 12.
After a long year of financial struggles and residual problems relating to the scandal, Casey’s parents’ marriage fell apart and finally split. Casey, along with his mom and younger sister, stayed in the Birmingham area while Eddy Rucks moved out of state, a blow to young Casey who continued to have a good relationship with his dad even after the divorce. At the behest of his mentor, Casey managed to maintain the focus instilled by his father (who he always insisted was innocent of his part in the department-wide scandal.)
Casey would face yet another demoralizing set back in 2011, when a deadly tornado outbreak devastated the South, leveling Casey’s neighborhood and many surrounding counties. The massive twister claimed everything but his mom, his sister and most of the clothes on their backs. It took another couple of years for Casey to get back on track, wanting to quit school all together to help rebuild and support his family’s life. Through encouragement and support from friends and family, Casey eventually clawed his way to college, enrolling in the very school his dad supposedly helped disgrace. Powering through the lingering stigma, Casey earned every inch of ground he gained in the since rebuilt basketball program. He considered the struggle and resulting rewards of being one of the best guards the school had seen since the incident as testament to his father’s lessons and his own resiliency.
