Biography

Brixcy Butler was born into a poor family with an absentee father and a mother who quickly had too many kids to properly look after. In this situation, he very quickly realized the need for self-sufficiency. Virtually no one was seriously enforcing his school attendance, and more often than not he needed to fight for food at home. So he started looking to his own needs outside of the household. Most of the time, no one knew he was gone. There was no shortage of abandoned buildings in his city, and he learned quickly which ones were safe to sleep in. Ultimately, he left school midway through the sixth grade and took to the streets for good. Soon his travels took him outside the city limits, and further northeast into the state (except for a brief stay in Fishkill, New York). Finally he hit pay dirt, or so he thought. He ended up in the parking garage of a long abandoned hotel- a large one, more than six hundred thousand square feet. After a fashion, he gained entry. Having a derelict motel room to himself wasyards better than sharing a bed with 3-4 siblings he didn’t get along with, so this was, to put it mildly, an easy choice.

Basketball wasn’t an activity he gravitated towards naturally. After escaping an overcrowded home, a team sport didn’t appeal to his sense of independence. But by now he had begun to have the right build and also some natural ability. So the first few times he was convinced to take part at the local court at which he’d begun to spend hours hanging out, he received the sort of praise he wasn't used to. This encouraged him to keep giving it a go, and eventually, the game was all he could think about. The possum picked up enough expertise to be able to excel at all positions, particularly once his growth spurt gained momentum.

Now there was another x-factor in the trajectory of his life around this time. One of the court regulars he’d met, and became friends with after a fashion, was current San Jose Thruster Shubael Hoisington. That was yet to happen, though. At this point they both were a couple of rootless teenage runaways balling on the same local court every day. It wasn’t until they both happened to decide to “go home” at the same time one evening that the possum found out that he and the skunk were already de facto roommates - both had been crashing at the same abandoned hotel! After a while, de facto became de jure. The skunk turned up at Brixcy’s room with his things. “I’m like ‘Close the door before anyone else moves in,’” says Brixcy.

Each boy had their own struggles for survival, and ways of coping. Different forms of employment came and went. But for Brixcy and Shubael, the quest to get better on the court became ever more intentional. The possum had never lacked a work ethic, despite his indifference to schooling. But seeing Shubael practice shots for hours alone inspired him to do the same. And when a scout from Atwood spotted the skunk in action that one fateful day, Brixcy was present as well. As such, he, too, was presented with an offer to attend ADub. The possum’s decision to go, and to dedicate himself to his chosen sport, was all his. Nevertheless, he is very aware of how he was in the right place at the right time in so many ways. “Bro likes to remind me of this on the regular,” he says, amused.
