Oh boy. What a night this has been, ladies and gentlemen. The Firestorm had a lot to prove going into their game against the Montana Howlers. After a humiliating defeat at home against the Edmonton Totems, you could tell there was a shift in team dynamic. They were in it to win it: there was none of the unfocused Firestorm that somehow turned in the most turnovers in a game in a long time. From the second they entered the starting line, you could tell they were out for a win. But there was one particularly notable instance of mood change: that of rookie forward Agundio Salvatore Atti-Morales (Cuban Black Hawk/Common Kestrel Hybrid, F). Agundio, normally a calm and professional player on the court, looked furious as he stepped onto the court at the beginning of the game. You could tell in the way he looked at Sterling Bengtzing (Marbled Polecat, C/F) that he was out for blood that night. From the opening tip-off, Agundio played harder than anyone could have anticipated, even himself. Fortunately for the Firestorm, the rest of the team seemed to pick up on that, and played their absolute hardest. In particular, Luna St. Peter (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, F) pushed ahead of the squad, and as the game went on both Agundio and Luna became attuned to each other's playstyles. They both put the pressure on Bengtzing, giving him one of his lesser performances as of late, and the plays energized the rest of the team into rushing ahead of the Howlers, with first Agundio and then Luna leading the charge against the Howlers. It was not as if the rest of the match were so one-sided. A push fourth-quarter push led by Kresta Renstill (Silver Fox, G) and Hiroyuki Matsuura (Shrike, C/F) was almost enough to assert dominance over the Firestorm. But in the end, the Firestorm showed they had a lot more to prove after their humiliating loss against Edmonton, and the game was given to the Firestorm after a particularly spectacular buzzer beater from veteran shooting guard Leonardo De Hugo (Lion, G). Hey, I did say the Firestorm was not to be underestimated. And seeing head coach Sabrina Lucifer's grin, I would say the Firestorm redeemed themselves nicely after their blunder against Edmonton. -Will Steinberg, the Miami Trumpeter.
