Well, this is certainly an interesting development. How in the world did this happen? Bangor Tides certainly aimed to be festive tonight. It was interesting to see them roll out a Festivus for the rest of us, and everyone who came to the Tides' game against the San Jose Thrust. Indeed, even San Jose Thrust's GM Reiko Akemi came in an ugly sweater. Well, it was a sweater she considered ugly, according to Tides GM Wesley Romero. Even Raoul Kidane (Ethiopian Wolf, C) appeared, wearing a very ugly sweater to get in the spirit of the holiday. Of course, by the end of the night, it became apparent that their star center's injury was what would ultimately give Bangor cause to air their grievances (politely, of course!). The first quarter was decidedly even between these two teams, but before they could pull out the aluminum pulls at halftime, Bangor found themselves at the receiving end of a four-point deficit. It was, of course, a deficit that the Tides were never fully able to recover from, as the San Jose Thrust remained ahead. Leading the charge was Rachel Barsky (Alaskan Malamute, F), who came to the halftime show wearing perhaps the ugliest sweater of the night. The over-enthusiastic husky quite obviously enjoyed herself at this year's Festivus, and perhaps that helped her lead an equally-enthusiastic Thrust to victory. It was certainly quite a change from the over-calculating opponents, all of whom seemed to approach the game with no levity whatsoever. It was not that they had no reason to be serious, considering Kidane's injury. But in the end, perhaps this over-focus detracted from the celebratory nature of the night. But oh well: they'll have time to knit more ugly sweaters in time for next year's Festivus. In the meantime, the Thrust can congregate around the aluminum pole and celebrate their win. And probably wrap Rachel Barsky in more wrapping paper than anyone should have any right to be wrapped in. -Will Steinberg, The Miami Trumpeter. |
