It seems that while no one was paying attention, the Pittsburgh Keystones went and got good. Tonight's win over the Baltimore Spirits extends their season-best winning streak to 12 games. And that's not just season-best for the Keystones - that's the best in the league. The Keystones may have been slow out of the gate this season, but ask any Pittsburgh fan who remembers last season and they will tell you a slow start is infinitely preferable to a rapid late-season collapse. The secret may lie in the team's makeup, with general manager Mark S. Quintaux and head coach Anton K. Schumacher having sought a balance between youth and experience. Sophomores Terrence Tolliver (Pronghorn, G) and Wayne Kirkpatrick (Tasmanian Devil, F) have been playing like their draft ratings promised, while veterans Ned Pritchard (Bullfrog, G) (who until recently was rumored being shopped around for trade) and Lance Freewell (Clouded Leopard, C) are providing the veteran leadership the team needs. All four have regularly notched double-digit points this season. Perhaps the only fur in Pittsburgh not feeling excited is franchise player and longtime fan favorite Alan Murphy (Kangaroo, F). The notoriously on-again-off-again marsupial has had far more off than on this season. Murphy jerseys hang unsold on gift shop racks while Tolliver, Freewell, and even Dreyvus fill the stands. The Aussie, historically one of the team's most visible players, has been avoiding team events and notably absent from postgame interviews. Analysts can only wonder if one of the Keystones' last links to the past will be around to reap the rewards of the future, or if Qantas will soon be grounded for good. -S. St. James
