A valiant effort by the Alphas fell short when the game-tying shots were blocked, preserving Plymouth's 2-point victory.
With the Taproots visiting the New York state capitol in the hopes of expanding their 2-game lead in the division, the Alphas got off to a poor start when Plymouth's well-oiled offensive machine burned the home team's defense for 60 points in the first half compared to the 40 scraped together by Albany. Compounding the hosting club's woes was longtime veteran Walter Robinson (Hyena, C) coming down awkwardly after a failed defensive rebound late in the second quarter and leaving the game shortly thereafter with pain in his left leg. Despite the 20-point deficit at the half, the Alphas regrouped behind former MVP Rodger Umaechi (Husky, F) and rookie René Lacoste (Jackal, G) who both tightened up their games and cut the gap in half by the start of the fourth quarter.
A combination of good defense and poor shot selection by the Taproots allowed Albany to nearly seal up the deficit midway through the final frame. Plymouth Head Coach Steve Bradford (Rat) wisely burned a full and his 20-second timeouts in a row, however, to reset the momentum that the hosting Alphas had built up as well as to re-focus his players. The remainder of the match was a see-saw defensive battle that saw more points scored on both sides from the charity stripe than from field goals, allowing Albany a glimmer of hope when they took a one-point lead with under a minute to go.
On Plymouth's final possession, franchise point Cheeto Wolfote (Wolfote, G) tried to drive the lane quickly in the hopes of scoring fast points, but had to dish the ball back out to Nina Lime (Wolf, G/F) at the arc when the defense collapsed. The lupine quickly fed the ball to Kasa Yalenchka (Snow Leopard, G) who had been camping in the corner, except she had to give it right back when Teresa Price (Raccoon, F) returned from doubling Cheeto to prevent the shorter KY from a clear shot. With the shot clock running out, Limelight sent the ball to Christopher Zwischenberger (Tabby Cat, F) who had used his bulk to post up deep on Viran Kivar (Jaguar, F). The quick turn around shot sank easily as a foul was drawn from Craig Reinhardt (Black Panther, F/C) who was late coming over on the double team. Cheezburgerz hit the free throw, his only one of the night, to give Plymouth 96 points to Albany's 94.
The Alphas' final possession was almost similar to that of the Taproots, but with less success. Instead of winding the clock down a bit, Lacoste drove through an opening in the defense hoping to tie the game up, but his shot was rejected by Gerrit-Jan Pretorius (Lion, F). Luckily for Albany, Umaechi came up with the ball outside the key, taking a sidestep to make a bit of space before firing off a line-drive jumper of his own. Without much arc or height on the ball, though, Raoul Kidane (Ethiopian Wolf, C) managed to swat that ball down court; by the time Riley Forgets Nothing (Raccoon, G/F) had collected the ball, his desperation three-pointer had been launched after the final buzzer.
"It's not that I think there should have been a goaltending call on that last block," commented Head Coach Rourke Danyals (Cat) after the game, "but we really could've used Big Walt out there for those final seconds to have kept Kidane busy. I'm still proud of my players to have come back from being down by so much at halftime, but we need to buckle down for the rest of the month, now that we're down two players."
Zwischenberger's 26 points and 9 rebounds, along with 4 assist and a block, earned him Player of the Game honors. Lime was a rebound and an assist away from a triple double with her 13 points for the night, while Wolfote added 16 points to his 4 assists, 2 rebounds, and a steal. Plymouth's next game is in Alabama visiting the Huntsville Mayors before heading back home on Valentine's Day to start a four-game homestand against the Williamsburg Minutemen.
Umaechi and Lacoste both led the Alphas with 19 points apiece, the husky double-doubling with 10 rebounds and 5 assists with 2 blocks while the jackal had 6 rebounds and 5 assists with 2 blocks and a steal. Anthony Rios (Raccoon, G/F) was the only other Albany player in double digits, scoring 12 points off the bench with 4 rebounds to go with an assist, a steal, and a block. The Alphas hit the road with a brief Southern Division trip, starting in Florida against the Tallahassee Typhoons then going up to Alabama to visit the Huntsville Mayors.
