Biography
A lot of experiences in life can be broken down into the class divide. The Rich and the Poor. People who have everything they could want in life and those who wish they had the opportunities to do said things. The people who barely have the work and the people who have to work just to keep a roof over their heads and no place in Australia quite exemplifies the class divide than Sydney.
The rich and well-off to the east in places like Manly in the Northern Beaches and Mosman in the Eastern Suburbs near the Sydney CBD, The poor and struggling in the West in places like Fairfield, Liverpool and Blacktown. For poor old Jett Marlow, He was born in the West end of town…
Growing up in a social housing estate with his family, Jett had always wished that he was in a better living situation. Having lived in poverty for all of his life, Jett wished he could have had a better life with better opportunities. A life where he didn’t have to take his sibling’s hand-me-downs or have to play sport with whatever he had lying around.
This led to Jett becoming a bit of a jokester by trying to mask his pain by making light of his situation. Jett would normally be known for making fun of himself being from Western Sydney and being lower class than the people around him. Walking around in thongs, a sleeveless shirt and shorts. Jett very much fit the description of a stereotypical bogan with his dress sense.
This led to Jett becoming a favorite around the area. What also made him notable around Western Sydney were his Basketball skills.
Jett wanted to be a sports star since he was little but kinda struggled to figure out what sport to go with. He loved Rugby League but knew that with his build, he was likely going to get hurt badly playing the game. Some people tried to point him to Aussie Rules but he detested the game. Even once calling it “Aerial Ping-Pong for Private School Boys who couldn’t handle League…” Comments that are likely to not have him in good stead with many of his fellow sportsfurs from the nation.
Jett tried Soccer but found it too slow and not flashy enough for his tastes. Plus with fees needing to be paid for him to even progress up the Australian Soccer Pyramid and get into an academy, It was going to be a non-starter for Jett…
However, It wasn’t long before the Kookaburra found the sport he was looking for. After school one day, there were a bunch of people around Jett’s estate playing a game of Pick-Up Basketball. With Jett bored and not having much else to do, he decided to join them.
As soon as Jett started to get the hang of dribbling and throwing the ball, He started to get into a groove and as he got into his groove, The Kookaburra found things to just come natural to him. He seemed to be able to move through opponents with ease and be able to shoot at the bucket with ease… He came across as pretty raw as he seemed to struggle with defensive aspects of the game but he did look like the kind of talent that with the right environment could become something special… And that was something that Jett noticed after finishing up for the day.
Not long after, Jett would join a local recreation Basketball league to start working on his skills and to try and get the attention of a team higher up on the Australian Basketball Pyramid. Almost instantly, Jett would show his potential in the local league and as the season continued to progress, Jett would draw the attention of the Sydney Blues who were looking for young, local talent to put into their academy team.
Seeing that Jett had a lot of raw talent in terms of offensive play, The Blues would give Jett an offer to spend some time with their academy team and work on his skills. Knowing that this could be his big break, Jett would accept on the spot. The Academy team would be where the intricacies of Jett would come to the forefront.
His fashion sense would be noticed right away and as time went on, Jett would show himself to be both the kind of guy who works on his skills to refine them but also the kind of guy who also does the bare minimum at training if he could get away with it…
This would get Jett into trouble as coaches felt that he was taking his opportunities for granted. They’d given him this shot and plucked him out of poverty in Western Sydney. If he wanted to keep this opportunity and get himself out of squalor, he needed to pick up the pace. As much as Jett complained to his coaches about it, he would listen and start to put more effort into his training.
That effort would be rewarded as he would get a consistent spot in the Academy's main squad playing Point Guard. Jett would show the league just how good he was as he tore through the paint with flair and wasn’t afraid to show off. This would build the Kookaburra a cult status around Australian Basketball Fans and it left people wondering when Jett would get his chance with the big boys in the FBL.
After a year in the academy team, Jett got his call-up to the main side and while minutes were hard to come by to begin with, Jett Marlow started to get his name out there as the season went on. With his silky smooth movement and his ability to drop buckets with ease, Many were wondering if he was Sydney’s next big star.
This was something that Jett took in his stride, being incredibly willing to talk to the media with his jokester charm. Jett very quickly became known as the larrikin of the FBL and a person known for their disregard of Basketballing Conventions.
In a world with players dressing up professionally and keeping up an image, Jett spoke his mind and dressed like he had just woken up from a night of drinking with his mates. He wasn’t afraid to be himself and let the world know it… This would gain Jett both fans and detractors but with his work of the count helping Sydney massively, The Blues were very much willing to let Jett be Jett.
After a while, The Kookaburra was starting to harbour ambitions of making it in the FBA and after seeing fellow countryman, Andrew McDonald-Rainbow in a press conference defending his teammates, Jett very much made his thoughts known.
“AMR is such soft c**t. He’s always letting Van Zant do whatever he wants. If I was his teammate, I’d give him a clip round the ears and tell him to shut the f**k up. What do ya expect from a Melbourne boy though? They’re all about feelings and all that s**t. He’s gotta man up.”
This post on social media would spread like wildfire and while McDonald-Rainbow wouldn’t comment on it, There was a sense that Jett was starting to make some moves to go to the FBA. Then, after a week or so, Jett would make his announcement to the world that he was going to be going to America.
“I feel like it’s time for me to spread my wings and represent this country with pride. I’m Western Sydney born and raised and I feel like it’s time someone showed the true ‘stralia onto the world stage. Someone who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is and someone who’ll show the world what this country is all about. That’s why I’m putting my name into the upcoming FBA Draft and getting myself onto the world stage. Australian Basketball needs a new leader and it’s me! Someone who’ll actually wear thongs and drink with the boys while showing Aussie Pride. Not some beakbrain who can’t pull his teammates head in. Australia needs Marlow! #Marlow4FBA”
While the press release felt more like he was getting ready to run for office than a declaration of joining the FBA, Jett Marlow was now ready to make his move into the FBA and while he’ll need to show people that he isn’t just a guy with a grievance, Jett feels excited to bring his style of play to the FBA and that maybe, Just maybe… He’ll become the bird that everyone thinks of when it comes to Australian basketball.
