Biography
The youngest of two children, Seelia was born in Adelaide to a mining family. While her father and mother went to work at a zinc mine, Seelia and her brother Cameron would go to school, and go to their grandparents until their parents returned from the subterranean mine in the evening. It was a mostly quiet but rugged life that would start to grate on the restless child, who’d rather spend time being active outside and playing sport games than inside with dolls.
While she’d do average in school, she’d soon find her real interest to be basketball. Once she reached Secondary school, she’d try to join their basketball team only to be passed over due to her ‘smaller stature’. Seelia would resent the coach’s decision, but would still play basketball during gym class at every opportunity, learning the game as she went through school. On more than one occasion, Seelia would get in trouble for skipping out on ‘boring’ classes like math and social studies, only to be found outside on the school’s basketball court.
Subsequently being rejected a second and third time after trying to join the school’s basketball team, Seelia’s parents would accuse the school’s coach of being racist against insects. However the accusations would lead nowhere and wouldn’t help get her onto the basketball team. With changing schools not an option, Seelia eventually would take to playing on the public basketball courts after school to learn and build her basketball skills.
As Secondary school progressed into Senior secondary school, Seelia would use her smart phone to record and stream her street ball games. Eventually gaining a small social media following from her videos, who enjoyed her improvisational playing style, while also gaining the nickname ‘Pinch’ for her reputation for occasionally using her forceps to trip other players up. Eventually her uploads would gain the attention of a coach up and over the Yorke Peninsula, in the coastal town of Port Lincoln.
Speaking with the coach, she was eventually convinced to apply for a scholarship, and would soon join the Porter Bay Technical college, and finally get on an actual basketball team. While she wasn’t taking classes, she would be focused on playing basketball. Refining her rough streetball playing style into something more polished, much like the ore her parents mined.
After a couple years of play, she and her coach felt she was ready to put in for the FBA Draft, following her former teammate Isidora Séverine with the same hope of being able to play for the FBA.
