Biography
The youngest of three, Charles was born in upstate New York. His first basketball experience came from his older brothers...and he hated it. The only reason they brought their younger brother along was so they could dominate and crush him. For years he refused to go with them, as he hated being looked down on, but genetics were on his side. Over the years he quickly outgrew his brothers, already a few inches taller than his fourteen-year-old brother by age ten. Compared to kids his own age he was huge, standing at least head above his classmates. It was at this time that he fell back into basketball, as he took great pleasure in being able to shut down and bully his way into the post due to his size
6’11” by age fourteen, Charles utilized earned a reputation as a dominant post player. This reputation caught the eye of Appalachian Academy scouts, and they recruited the young roo to come play at the basketball prep school. But his attitude went unseen by the scouts. No one dared challenge him in Middle School due to his size, and his ego grew as he was able to push around his teammates.
This proved problematic as a Freshman as he quickly butted heads with the upperclassmen when he tried to lambast his fellow Freshman. Though rather than change Charles merely kept his maw shut, bidding his time till the upperclassmen graduated and he would be able to do as he pleased. He did not have to wait long as by his Junior year he stood at an impressive 7’6”, and even the Seniors refused to speak back to him. Thus he spent the last two years of High School as ‘king’ of the court.
College scouts fell in love with his size, even if he lacked shooting range he could easily back down deep into the post. Charles ended up picking the East Coast University, a school nicknamed Easy-University for their lax grades and party atmosphere. On the court he continued to dominate, averaging 15.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. However, off the court he had issues.
Charles used his status as a ‘star’ recruit to get his way, everything from showing up to practice late and rarely, if ever, turning in class assignments. For a while the school ‘helped’ him out, assigning him tutors and getting extensions on assignments. But even the school could only keep him eligible for so long as he spent most his free time partying around campus. As his Freshman year wrapped up he was pulled into the coach’s office and informed that based on his current grades he would be placed on academic suspension. This only served to enrage Charles and he declared that he would not waste his time in the classroom, thus Charles declared for the FBA draft.
