Ogun Okayu was born in a relatively well-off section of the Cameroonian capital of Yaounde, with his mother being a nurse at the main hospital and his father working in construction. They were not rich, per se, but could live in an adequate environment to support a growing family. Like many boys growing up in Cameroon, Ogun wanted to play soccer and spent the days playing with his friends in the hopes that they would get noticed by roaming scouts and cultivated by a club to groom into the next European superstar.

But it quickly became obvious that the young Ogun would not be one of those; for starters, he had grown to a height of 6'2" and was already starting to fill out nicely at age 11. His friends posted him as a defender, and while they thought he was good, there was no way any club scouts would take a lumbering rhino over more fleet-footed types that were also that tall. At age 12, tragedy would strike the Okayu family when Ogun's father would lose his life in an accident on a work site, leaving his mother to raise Ogun and his younger sister by themselves. On top of that, the hospital that Ogun's mother worked at ended up shutting down, so with bleak prospects ahead of them, they decided to leave Cameroon and pursue a life elsewhere. They ended up moving to New Orleans in the United States, where Ogun's mother found a job at a hospital, and found love in the form of a rhino named David Newstead.

It was David, a teacher and high school basketball coach, who was able to convince Ogun, now 14 and approaching the 7-foot mark, to give basketball a try. He struggled at first, but he was a fast learner and quickly grew into one of the Big Easy's top prospects under the guidance of "Papa David." By his senior year, Ogun was drawing national attention, and keeping to his soccer roots, was excellent at defending as he averaged an unheard of 16 rebounds and 5 blocks per game. He could have gone anywhere, but decided to stay in Louisiana and took on a scholarship at Acadiana University.

In his freshman and sophomore years, Ogun started to round out as a complete bigfur as he was averaging 14.7 points a game as well as 12.7 rebounds and 3.1 blocks for the Acadians. But it was after an improbably run to the Furry Four this past season that he learned his mother had a stroke, and was unable to return to work at the hospital. He knew that he promised her that he would complete his education, but the thought of being a high pick in the FBA Draft also weighed heavily in his mind. After much deliberation, Ogun made the decision to forgo his remaining eligibility and declare for the draft, hoping that he can land a big money deal...and in return, be able to afford the round-the-clock care his mother needs and his stepfather is struggling to keep up with.
