Biography
Lucy Cousland never grew up for want of anything: growing up in a rich household in Salt Lake City, her CEO father and her nurse mother were able to provide her everything she wanted, and more. This did not change even when she moved to Wellesley, Massachussets at the ripe young age of seven so her father could tend to his business better. She was a perfectly happy child, growing up with her parents and her beloved housekeeper Sue Ellen.
While they lived in Wellesley, she began to feel a strange sense of isolation: her parents, ever the money savers, had sent her to a less prestigious private school where she became the most interesting girl in school. It was a great many things that contributed to this, from her well-kept fur to her consistently high marks. But despite this, Lucy never felt satisfied: she admittedly missed the English countryside, and in addition to that she had a difficult time keeping friends in the private school owing to her attitude.
It was through this set of circumstances that she first found her roots in basketball. It was a silly little game, one that father had always decried, and yet the kids that played in the basketball court after school were the only ones who took Lucy in. She began to feel more at home with that crowd than she did with her private life, so despite her parents’ protestations she kept meeting up with that crowd, all the way through middle school and into high school. All the while, she began to grow closer to Sue Ellen, the two forming a close bond as Sue Ellen remained much more libertine than either of her parents.
After the beginning of high school, however, Sue Ellen unexpectedly quit. The nanny of many years never lost her connection to Lucy, but she noted the cold way that the Cousland matriarch regarded her. It was only as she scanned the morning paper that she saw the sexual harassment suit Sue Ellen had filed against her father. She also bore witness as her father mercilessly made sure Sue Ellen paid for bringing the suit forward in the first place. After a little while, nobody believed Sue Ellen: nobody, of course, except for Lucy, who knew that Sue Ellen would never lie about such a thing, and especially not to her.
After that point, Lucy cared not about her parents’ (and especially her father’s) approval: she continued basketball, only this time she did her best at the sport. She was awarded for her efforts by being crowned the basketball captain, although whispers in the school suggested her family’s standing had something to do with it. Before long, she received various scholarships to colleges, including one to Brown Dog University. She ultimately cared not when her parents refused her even this: she made the decision on her own behalf, and marched off to Rhode Island.
However, as soon as she entered BDU, Lucy realized she did not like doing business. Thus, she spent her entire first semester concentrating on her game, building herself up in the team. It was through a bench player, however, that she discovered what she thought would be her calling in life: she discovered gender studies, thanks to one of the bench players on her team. Seeing this as a chance to spite her father, she began to engage in that as her degree program, working diligently to learn all she could about her chosen line of work while playing her basketball game.
It was right as she changed her major that a major sit-in happened in her school, with many a feminist activist organizing a walk-out to protest a particular anti-feminist speaker coming to the school. She was surprised to see her basketball team join the walk-out with her, however: they had all hoped to support her in her first endeavor in activism.
Thus, she thought back to the times she managed to watch FBA games with Sue Ellen. It was there that she began to follow her idols, particularly Vera la Tierra and Catherine DeMille. And then, she realized something through her activism: her position on the sports team gave her power, the power to do what so many people could not. She also knew something else: if she were to join the FBA and be as prominent as those women, she could provide the voice for every woman like Sue Ellen that she knew.
With this, she packed her bags, declaring for the FBA Draft right as soon as her studies were finished.
