Biography
“You can always count on Esmeralda.”.
This is a phrase that pretty much sums up the life of Esmeralda Patterson, coming from West Valley City, Utah. Her family is pretty modest. Her dad is a bus driver for the city transport as her Mom owns a spa and relaxation business in the city. The one thing that set her family apart, being in a Mormon state, the Pattersons were pretty open about their faith. “Treat people the way you want to be treated” has always been the family motto, and they've been living a meaningful life. There were some “loud conversations” and “awkward situations” here and there, but Esmeralda always seemed to find a way to diffuse things through thoughtful talks and calming demeanor. Cause at the end of the day, no matter what you were thinking at the time, whoever was trying to stir trouble with the Pattersons ended up looking bad, bottom line.
So throughout the years, Esmeralda grew to be quite a down to earth girl, with a presence that was both soothing and comforting to anyone that knew her. She took a liking to most of her Mother’s hobbies, going on ahead to enjoying things such as knitting, candle making, and yoga. But what Esmeralda really liked to do was gardening and Landscaping. Working and creating a little slice of tranquility and heaven at your own home was something she liked and really got better into with time and effort. But as great everything she was doing was so far, she also felt she needed to put her energy somewhere else, to sort to find a certain balance in her life. And this is where she has basketball. Because for Esmeralda, Basketball was sorta the ying of her yang, where she found peace and quiet to her hobbies, she found dedication and and determination over being on the basketball court. While still being fairly young, her care for others and will to help them be their best and persevere made her a peak motherly figure to some of her teammates. That mentality of being there and being held to such a high esteem didn’t bother her. In fact, this drove her further to improve herself so she could with any luck share her views and life lessons to those who wished to sit down and listen, making the world a little bit better, one person at the time.
So she took her talents through highschool, as soon enough she showed great leadership abilities and was a productive power forward, where her surprising shooting touch made her a great stretch four. She was offensive minded because early in her career her team had trouble scoring and didn't have real good guards, so she took upon herself to give it extra in her shooting drills as she soon developed into a clever scorer, also capable of grabbing some boards and dish the ball to an open teammate. She would then gain several accolades, like many other rising stars, as she soon was on the radar of college scouts, but she had her mind settled on that front. Not wanting to go to far from her family, and also make the whole ordeal cheaper, she settle to stay in her home state, as when college time rolled on she would enlist into Sauropsida University in Salt Lake city, where she studied for a marketing degree for the purpose to eventually grow her own landscaping business when time would come. The jump from High School to College wasn't without difficulty; A couple of years after FBA star’s Eliza Mae Dupont was leading Sauropsida University, the team scheme was more defensively oriented. Esmeralda's role was pretty limited in her freshman and sophomore season, as the coach was focusing on her to use her size to collect rebounds and be defensive at the paint. She had less chances to shoot, but what helped is that she needed to be more selective with her shots which improved her offensive IQ and raised her shooting percentage tremendously. She never complained or had arguments with her coaches; she continued to be a good teammate for her friends and improved on her game every step of the way.
Her chance to shine finally came during the summer as she was part of a team scrimmage between freshmans and seniors, while she was a Junior, she was put with the freshman players to equal the teams. She had finally the occasion to take charge and help the freshman team make a big comeback against the seniors, but ended up losing. Esmeralda was then complimented for her leadership and her improved offensive abilities, which in turn made the coach switch to a more offensive friendly scheme for the team, which allowed Esmeralda to use her strengths in play. So the team slowly but surely built on some success, as they thought they could return to the FCAA tournament in 2022, during Esmeralda’s senior year. At the beginning of the year, the coaching staff wanted to make Esmeralda team captain, but wasn't too sure as they was some worries that putting her on that spot would cause some of the more prominent fans of the college (mostly boosters) would argue about Esmeralda “views” (as some members of the teams came from Mormon families as well as some that were really religious). Esmeralda, again thinking about the good of the team, wanted to refuse the position, but the coaches allowed the team to make a vote.It was unanimous, they all wanted Esmeralda to be the captain.
Happy and encouraged, Esmeralda took the field as captain in the 2022 season and they never looked back, the road was definitely hard, but with the team rallying with Esmeralda the managed to make to the “First four” segment of the FCAA tournament, as they were a 16th seed and battle another fellow 16th seed in Los Angeles South College. Sauropsida fought hard, with Esmeralda leading the charge with 29 points and 16 rebounds, but ended up losing 98-96 in overtime. Although the end was not what they wanted, Esmeralda was recognized by her peers she looked ahead to the next stage of her life, the FBA where she hoped, just like she did in Sauropsida, be a dependable athlete and inspire people and young talent to make their world, a more peaceful place.
